The term "La" refers to respecting learning. As it is said in the Compendium of Trainings: "Mindfulness arises from extreme respect." Therefore, through the teachings of a wise teacher, one's own sense of shame, conscientiousness, and respect for learning, the twelve types of mindfulness mentioned in the Compendium of Trainings will arise. Furthermore, other causes for the arising of mindfulness are mentioned, such as "Buddha." It means that I am always present before the wise Buddhas, and if I were to fall away from the trainings, they would be displeased. Thinking in this way, in order not to fall away from the trainings, one should always maintain mindfulness. If one does so, what benefits will there be? The following will mention "Therefore," and so on. If someone wonders what benefits there are to mindfulness, the following will mention "When," and so on. If one does not forget what should and should not be done, then one will not lose the correct awareness that knows things as they are. When even if one does not possess the correct awareness that distinguishes other things, but because mindfulness has not declined, when encountering other things, that correct awareness will manifest. Now, in order to explain the method of following with mindfulness, first, in order to explain that one should examine the conduct of the mind with the correct awareness that goes first in all actions, therefore, it is said, "For a while, first," and so on. "For a while, first" means that before engaging in that action, with the correct awareness that goes first in all actions, before entering into an un-concentrated activity, a mind with agitation and dullness is faulty, and the opposite is without fault. When the time for sitting and sleeping arrives, being particularly attached to the comfort of sitting and sleeping is faulty, this is examining the state of the body. One should know that the intention to perfect all virtuous qualities is without fault. At that time, one should turn away from the faulty mind, and one should be able to grasp the faultless mind like grasping wood, this is the meaning of abiding.

Therefore, the term "with flaws" is merely symbolic. Conversely, one should also understand the mind without flaws. Now, regarding conduct, in order to explain that at the beginning of all actions, before entering the awareness of walking, one should first understand how to walk, how not to walk, where to go, where not to go, and so on, and then engage in action, therefore, "meaningless" etc. are mentioned. Now, for other bodily and verbal actions such as sleeping, eating, sitting, and speaking, one should also first, at the beginning of all actions, understand what to do and what not to do through the awareness of walking, and then accomplish it. To explain this, "such a state" etc. are mentioned. This is abiding in the accompanying awareness, and in order to examine the actions of body, speech, and mind, "of the body" etc. are mentioned, distinguishing

are merely indicative. It should also be combined in this way: The body should walk in this way. After the action is completed, from then on, in any case, the main point should be completely grasped, and not even a moment should be lost. At this time, one should observe how the body exists. Likewise, eating and sleeping should not be mentioned. Similarly, in terms of speech, one should say: Speech should speak in this way. After the action is completed, from then on, in any case, the main point should be completely grasped, and not even a moment should be lost. At this time, one should say how speech is speaking. Similarly, the mind should think in this way. After the action is completed, from then on, in any case, the main point should be completely grasped, and not even a moment should be lost. What is my mind doing? Now, one should separately examine the mind. It should be combined in this way. When summarizing by saying "This should be done, that should be done," it is merely indicative. It should also be known that what is being summarized is not "This should be done, that should be done." However, if one thinks about how to protect after observing in that way, for that purpose, "fear" and so on are mentioned. For example, at times, when one sees someone being chased and fleeing by executioners, etc., even if one guards the precepts of avoiding speech as if seeing the executioners, etc., it will not become giving the gift of fearlessness. However, at any time, if one lies for the sake of giving the gift of fearlessness, one will not guard the precepts. Therefore, at that time, one cannot guard both at the same time. At that time, because giving the gift of fearlessness is more important, one should abandon the precepts of avoiding lying in order to protect life. As it is also said in the sacred Vinaya: The one being killed flees, and at that time the executioner asks him, at that time one should say: Come here, do you see the sky or the fingernail? Beings did not see that. It is said like this. In the Sutra Taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, the equanimity of abandoning the precepts at the time of giving, etc., is also extensively taught. That
