Given that there are faults, I should properly grasp my own mind and carefully guard it, keeping it away from carelessness. Why? Because it has been said to guard the mind, guarding the mind is the antidote to abandoning obscurations, so guarding the mind is the supreme asceticism, but if the mind does not abide in asceticism, then what is the use of many other bodily, verbal, and mental asceticisms? Because it is not the antidote to afflictions, so it is meaningless, that is its summary. Then, will its twelve qualities of practice, etc., also become meaningless? No, because it is still accompanied by afflictions. When it does not become a branch of abandoning afflictions, then these are also meaningless, let alone the asceticism of outsiders? Then, how should it be guarded, and until when? It has been said "immeasurable" etc. Then, what kind of faults and benefits are there, that one would want to guard the mind? It has been said "wound" etc., and it has also been said "such behavior" etc. Then, to what extent should the mind be guarded? It has been said "my gains" etc., meaning that even if one offers it together with gains etc., one should guard the mind. Then, how should the mind be guarded? It has been said "wanting to guard the mind" etc., abiding in mindfulness is to be able to know what should and should not be done, abiding in mindfulness, one will not forget it, therefore one will engage in what should be done and abandon what should not be done. If the brief teaching is explained in detail, what kind of faults are there, and in order to abandon it, one should abide in mindfulness and awareness? In order to eliminate this doubt, three kinds of faults of not abiding in mindfulness are revealed. Among them, first, it has been said "like disease" etc., meaning that, like being disturbed by disease, because one knows what should and should not be done, one will lose the ability to accomplish and abandon them in order. Secondly, it has been said "without mindfulness" etc., meaning that no matter how much one hears etc.

However, here, because there is no such unspeakable mindfulness, one becomes forgetful, and even what is heard is wasted, which is a summary statement. From the third perspective, it is said "having heard" and so on, even if one has heard much, etc., because one does not know what should be done and what should not be done, entering into the part that should be done, and entering into the part that should not be done, one will be accompanied by downfall, which is the meaning of that. Now, among the two faults of not abiding in mindfulness, the first is to show that the near afflictions of non-mindfulness arise in the continuum. It is said "without mindfulness" and so on, the non-mindfulness with the characteristic of not knowing what should be done and what should not be done arises, and because of its influence, one does not enter into the part that should be done, so future merits will not increase, and because one has done what should not be done, what was previously accumulated will also be destroyed, thereby falling away from the happiness of higher realms and liberation, and going to the lower realms, which is a summary statement. Now, from the second perspective, it is shown that other near afflictions arise in the continuum. It is said "afflictions" and so on, when one forgets what should be done and what should not be done, other afflictions such as desire will also arise, just as the faults shown before. Now, from the perspective of how to protect mindfulness, the instruction is that mindfulness should not be separated from one's mind. It is said "therefore" and so on, meaning that because there is such a fault, it is said "therefore." If one does not let it go? It is said "even if it goes, it goes" and so on, meaning that if mindfulness is lost, there will be the faults mentioned above, so one should not let mindfulness go unnoticed. Also, the meaning here is: even if not letting go of mindfulness is like that, but if it is lost, what should be done with the seed? It is said "even if it goes" and so on, meaning that if it is lost, one should remember the faults mentioned before, and then recall it again. Then, from what cause does mindfulness arise? It is said "the lama and" and so on, where "fear" and so on refer to knowing shame and having embarrassment. Respect.
