Therefore, it is taught to strive to abandon afflictions. If it were not so, it would be unreasonable for oneself to be transformed into the hell realms. Now, in order to teach in a concluding manner, "Thus contemplate" and so forth are spoken. The meaning of "Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Conduct" is as before. "Guarding Mindfulness" refers to attachment, hatred, ignorance, and laziness, allowing them to arise and cease on their own. The explanation of the third chapter is complete. Now, in order to abide in mindfulness, the faults of not guarding the mind are briefly explained. One verse is spoken about guarding the training, directly explaining the benefits and faults from the perspective of this life, while the benefits and faults of the next life are indirectly indicated. Among these, the first two root verses explain the benefit of truly not degenerating from the training. The latter two explain the faults of this life, which are the opposite of that. Now, focusing on elaborating on the faults of the next life, "The elephant of the mind" and so forth are spoken. Now, from the perspective of benefits, "From all mindfulness" and so forth briefly explain the benefits of this life and the next. "Tiger" and so forth extensively explain the benefit of eliminating all fears of this life and the next. From "If" to "They wander in meaningless pursuits," the benefits of guarding the mind are extensively explained, namely, that all virtuous qualities can be obtained. Among these, all virtuous qualities can be summarized by the six perfections, so first, from the perspective of the perfection of generosity, it is explained from "If beings are poor" and so forth. If so, how can the virtuous qualities arising from guarding the mind be obtained? If it is not accomplished by merely guarding the mind, then how? If all beings in the world are made poor, and then become wealthy, thus the perfection of generosity is completed, then this would also be a very great accumulation, and furthermore, there are countless poor people in the world. The former protectors, with the generosity of

Therefore, if one clings to complete perfection, that would also be inappropriate. So what should one do? It is by guarding one's own mind, not being overly attached to the body and possessions, etc., that one is said to have perfected the perfection of generosity, simply by having a mind of giving to others. Therefore, making others wealthy is also accomplished effortlessly, so it is said that one can obtain it. This is the summarized meaning. "All possessions" refers to the body and possessions. "Together with the fruit" refers to the fruit that arises from giving, which is the root of virtue. Thus, all three are given away, so it is said, "All possessions together with the fruit." Now, from the perspective of discipline, mentioning "fish, etc.," the so-called "abandoning killing" does not mean stopping those fishermen, etc., who kill, in order to prevent fish, etc., from dying. Because doing so is very difficult, and it would also be considered that the previous protectors had not completely perfected the discipline of abandoning killing. Therefore, the so-called "abandoning killing" means that merely by oneself obtaining the mind of abandoning killing, one can effortlessly stop fishermen, etc., thereby perfecting the abandonment of a large amount of killing, and one can truly obtain the root of virtue that arises from discipline. Just like with discipline, from patience to wisdom, it is also by merely guarding one's own mind, without having to make efforts to stop external enemies, lazy people, distracted people, and those with wrong wisdom, etc., that one can perfect (the practice) from patience to wisdom, merely by guarding one's own mind, keeping it away from harmful thoughts, laziness, distraction, and wrong wisdom. Therefore, it is said that one can obtain all good. Now, from the perspective of patience, the so-called "perfection of patience, abandoning harmful thoughts" is not about stopping those enemies, etc., who generate harmful thoughts, because doing so would create great difficulties, etc., and the two faults mentioned earlier. Therefore, guarding one's own mind, keeping it away from harm
