If it is said that it is based on..., then it is the same here. If it is said that without the vows of the Hearers, can the vows of the Bodhisattvas arise? Why can't they arise? If it is said that it is because of reliance, why is it said that it is because of no reliance? Or it is said that it is because there is no vow as a basis. The first statement is unreasonable, because the aspiration for Bodhicitta itself is the basis. The second statement is also unreasonable, because if it exists, it will become without any inconsistency. If it is said that the vows of the Hearers must be the basis, then in the completely pure world, in some places there are not even the names of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and they can only be obtained through Dharma nature, and there is no way to express them, which would become a fault. If it is said that this is what is desired, then because there is no valid measure to prove it. Furthermore, at the time of death and transference, because the basis is destroyed, the vows of the Bodhisattvas will also be destroyed, which would become a fault. If it is said that it is the basis of attainment, but not the basis of existence, so there is no fault, then it is not so, because there is no reason to prove that point. If it is said that because it is not the basis of existence, even if death occurs, the vows of the Bodhisattvas will not disappear, then in this case, even the vows of the Hearers, the vows of the Bodhisattvas will not disappear, because it is not the basis of existence. For example, like the next life. If it is said that for the next life, because it is not the basis of existence, there is no fault, then in this case, for this life, it is also the same as not being the basis of existence. If it is said that in this life, because of abandoning the faults of nature and co-emergence, it exists, therefore it is the basis, then it is the same for the next life, because at that time also, the faults of nature and co-emergence are abandoned. If it is said that without the vows of the Hearers, the vows of the Bodhisattvas will not arise, so it is necessary to be the basis, then because there is no reason to prove that it does not arise. If it is said that without the vows of the Hearers, the faults of nature and co-emergence will not be abandoned, so the vows of the Hearers are needed as the basis, then why are the two kinds of faults of the precepts of the Bodhisattva vows not

Giving up, or why seek the precepts of the Hearers as a basis? The precepts of the Hearers are summarized by seven abandonments, are not the precepts of the Bodhisattvas summarized by ten abandonments? Furthermore, the precepts of the Hearers are only abandoning oneself, it is the nature of abandoning only this life, while the precepts of the Bodhisattvas also cause others to abandon, it is the nature of abandoning until reaching the essence of Bodhi, even though it is like that, abandoning it and seeking the precepts of the Hearers as a basis, this is showing oneself to be foolish, and it is appropriate to be laughed at by the wise. Therefore, the basis of precepts is the precepts of the Bodhisattvas, in the Bodhisattva grounds, what is the discipline that gathers virtuous dharmas? It says, 'Relying on properly taking the precepts.' And in the *Compendium of Ascertainments*, it also says, 'It gathers and brings all virtuous dharmas.' And in the *Compendium of the Great Vehicle*, it also says, 'For the sake of abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions, the precepts themselves are taught as the basis.' The precepts of the Hearers are not like that, because they do not gather and bring all the roots of virtue other than that, and it is not that at all times, one abandons oneself and also causes others to abandon the path of the ten non-virtuous actions. If so, how does that discipline of precepts gather all virtuous dharmas? All virtuous dharmas, in short, are just perfecting virtuous dharmas in one's own continuum and maturing sentient beings, among which perfecting virtuous dharmas in one's own continuum is summarized by the six perfections, among which abiding in the discipline of precepts is not only the nature of the perfection of discipline, but also for the sake of abandoning or causing others to abandon killing all sentient beings, etc., at all times, giving fearlessness to all sentient beings, not turning back from harming others, and increasingly abandoning that,
