Even if it is the earth, it still clings to this body as self. The so-called self is clinging to self, and even if there is no self, it will still function. If it is said that the mind of protecting the feet and so on will arise, this is also not good. How should one eliminate what is unreasonable, that is, what is inconsistent with reason? One should eliminate self and other, and do one's best. When one is powerless, one should maintain equanimity, this is the meaning. If self and so on do not exist, then there is a continuum. Similarly, for the many hands and feet and so on, there is also a collective body. How do these two exist in this life and the next, and determine that I bear suffering and so on? Therefore, what is the difference? This reason is not established, and the former is uncertain. Because of doubt, the cause and so on are mentioned. The so-called continuum does not exist in the ultimate truth. However, the things of cause and effect enter, and this is the nature of momentary continuity. Because the difference between them is not observed. These moments, in order to express the concept in the mind with one word, are called continuum. In this way, this is what can be observed. Therefore, one should abandon clinging here. Otherwise, if someone does not admit it, what harm can I cause? Similarly, collective things and so on do not exist alone. Because the difference between them and these things is not observed. Moreover, since it cannot be established by analyzing the parts from the perspective of the same and different entities, it should not be said here. Therefore, this is also like before, existing only in the conventional truth. In order to illustrate these sequences, examples such as garlands and armies are given. The continuum is like a garland, and the collection is like an army and so on. The word "etc." includes garlands and forests and so on. Just like the many ants and so on, these things that exist in sequence, apart from their own nature, are a continuum like strung flowers.

One does not exist. When elephants, horses, and infantry, etc., are gathered, there is not even the slightest other thing there, such as a different army. Similarly, assembly is also like that, and this has been extensively studied elsewhere, so it will not be studied here. Therefore, this knowledge is false, because it is always separate from the object it refers to, and therefore cannot withstand scrutiny of its meaning. If that is the case, since there is no master such as self, there is also no suffering, etc., related to anything. Therefore, who would become the master of that suffering? No one, that is the meaning. If self, etc., does not exist, then how are examples such as "I am like suffering" and "Because it is a sentient being, I am like a body" appropriate? This is indeed true, but it is not to be proven through the means of poverty, but rather for the purpose of abandoning the manifest clinging to considering others as self. If that manifest clinging to considering others as self ceases, then there is no need for subsequent inferential reasoning. But if it does not cease, then with that very thought, one should separate one's own part and the part of others, and for the purpose of understanding it, one should prove and give examples. If that is the case, the example is not established, because it is for the purpose of entering into nomenclature. Furthermore, considering the aggregates that are grasped, there is no fault in making the example, so the word "I" is used here. Now, if one wishes to summarize the present situation, then in saying "immeasurable suffering," etc., in the order of what has been said, which things have no master? This is a summary of the words, meaning that it is not related to anything that is not self. It is distinguished by saying, "Not even the slightest thing is," because nowhere, belonging to no one, is there any self, and because there is nothing more special than this, suffering itself becomes something to be averted without distinguishing self and other, and for that, there is no other reason, such as self. Therefore, whose self is to be averted, and others are not, this must be.
