A Difficult Commentary on Entering the Bodhisattva's Conduct. Wisdom Arising Intelligence. A Difficult Commentary on Entering the Bodhisattva's Conduct. Wisdom Arising Intelligence. In Sanskrit: Bodhicaryāvatārapañjikā. In Tibetan: A Difficult Commentary on Entering the Bodhisattva's Conduct. Homage to the Noble Youthful Manjushri. Homage to the Noble Avalokiteśvara, Lord of Power. Volume One. I prostrate with my head to the Victorious Ones with great light, Together with the Sugatas, the Dharmakaya, and the Sugata's Sons. Having uprooted the tree of delusion and destroyed all elaborations. Following for the benefit of sentient beings afflicted by suffering such as birth. I shall compose a difficult commentary That clarifies the words and speech And makes understandable the profound meaning Of Entering the Bodhisattva's Conduct. One who is very clear in intelligence regarding the meaning of Entering the Bodhisattva's Conduct, And who has entered into the nature of the inner self through familiarity with the taste of the scriptures, is able to speak. What power do I, a fool, have to speak on that meaning? Nevertheless, Because I have practiced virtue and it has become a good result, therefore I enter. I have little quality, habit, or confidence, And no wisdom adorned with qualities. Although that is so, why do I enter into such words? It is the result of relying on a noble spiritual friend. Here, the noble Shantideva, having realized the suchness of the meaning of all the scriptures, Having attained the greatness of samadhi, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment, Endowed with compassion for sentient beings, without regard for his own happiness, Wishing to benefit and bring happiness to others, focusing on the qualities of a bodhisattva, Having entered the supreme taste through familiarity with those qualities himself, and wishing to show that path to others as well, intends to compose "Entering the Bodhisattva's Conduct." Therefore, he spoke the verses beginning with "Sugata." This verse shows seven meanings in brief: Paying homage to the Three Jewels and the Khenpo and others worthy of homage, What is to be said, the need, and the explanation of its expression, Abandoning self-made compositions, refuting

It is to abandon the fault of. In that, "Sugata Dharmakaya and retinue": This refers to the Three Jewels. "Prostration" refers to the act of prostration. "Respectfully" refers to the distinction of that itself. "To all who deserve reverence" refers to the virtuous spiritual friends and so on. "Entering the discipline of the Sugata's sons" indicates what is to be spoken. "To be taught" states the need. There is no word showing the connection, it is to be understood by implication. "Like the scriptures" is the word to abandon self-made compositions. "In brief" is the word to abandon repetition, this is the meaning of brevity. The meaning of the limbs should also be stated, for "Sugata", here the word "gone" shows the distinction from ordinary people, because they all abide in samsara, while the Sugata has completely transcended samsara. The word "good" has three meanings such as beauty, therefore the particularly excellent Sugata is spoken of. Therefore, the meaning is this: Just as it is praised, like this, by realizing the meaning of the Middle Way, having gone away from abandoning the obscurations such as afflictions, therefore it is Sugata. This shows the perfection of abandonment. Or, praising that all dharmas are gone into suchness without self-nature is realization, that is Sugata. This shows the perfection of realization. This itself also shows the distinction from the teachers of the heretics. Because they do not proceed beautifully with the view of clinging to self and so on, and self is also harmed by valid cognition, and it is not an antidote to samsara, so it is not beautiful to go. Going without returning again means that the cause of faults such as rebirth and desire, that is, the seed of ego-grasping, ignorance, is completely abandoned, so it is Sugata. This shows the distinction from the Stream-enterer, the Once-returner, and the Bodhisattvas, because although they praise going, they have not completely abandoned the cause.
