This means acting in an extremely gentle manner, just like healing a disease. Healing means liberating someone from illness. A great patient refers to someone who is chronically ill, i.e., those who are afflicted by great illnesses such as desire. So, how does one act in a gentle manner? As it is said, like "in moderation," etc., in order to eliminate the defilement of stinginess, and to increase the accumulation of happiness and well-being, one initially offers herbs, powders, and a small amount of alcohol that can completely heal, which is arranged by the Bhagavan. Furthermore, it is arranged with special skillful means. The "that" here is a worldly expression. If that is the case, by gradually becoming accustomed to giving small gifts, etc., one becomes accustomed to giving great gifts, and when that reaches its peak, there will be no difficulty later on, but one will voluntarily give one's own flesh and blood, etc. Furthermore, thinking, why is this? It is said, "when," etc., i.e., at what time, when the habit of giving, etc., has reached its peak, thereby completely separating from stinginess, even towards one's own flesh, a mind arises that is without attachment, like treating it as herbs. At that time, because it is not impossible to give away one's own flesh and blood, etc., what difficulty is there at that time? There is none at all. So, even if that is the case, how can one eliminate suffering like what, by wandering in samsara for a long time for the benefit of others? It is said, "sin," etc., the harm of suffering only produces two kinds, namely, those arising from the body and those arising from the mind. However, these two are not possible for a Bodhisattva, because they have abandoned all faults through body, speech, and mind, so this suffering of the body does not arise. Since the scriptures and reason have established the two kinds of selflessness, how can suffering of the mind exist? Like this, wrong conceptualizations refer to those conceptualizations that are not true, which lead to attachment to self and what belongs to self, and because of being overly attached to things, it causes sentient beings to suffer, and sins, i.e., killing, etc.

The body is suffering. Therefore, for the time being, in order to abandon the cause of suffering, it is shown that suffering does not arise in this body. Now, in order to show that this body is only happiness, "merit" and so on are spoken. For the body in which happiness arises, the body is happiness; for the mind in which happiness resides, the mind is happiness; therefore, both are endowed with happiness. Those who possess great compassion, wandering in samsara for the benefit of others, what suffering would weary them and make them feel weary? Or by what would they be weary? Because there is no cause for weariness, they are not weary of anything, so they think. Since this is the case, why retreat out of fear for no reason? Even so, through long-term practice and meditation, one can perfectly attain complete enlightenment through the great accumulation of merit, so foolish people will practice more quickly, thinking that relying on the Hearer Vehicle is the best, and thus have doubts. Therefore, "This is the power of Bodhicitta" and so on are spoken. Whatever sins were committed in the past will be exhausted by the power of Bodhicitta itself. Just as it was said before: "Like the fire at the end of an eon, sinful people will surely burn in an instant." Just like this. Similarly, accumulating through the power of Bodhicitta is giving, that is, the ocean of merit. Constantly increasing the power of merit, as vast as the sky. Thus it is said. With this kind of power of faith, the bodhisattva who abides in the Great Vehicle goes faster and more quickly than the Hearers and others. Therefore, "Thus" and so on summarize and show the meaning to be expressed. Thus is the order of speech. Because faults are eliminated and sins committed in the past are exhausted, even in dreams one can be free from falling into the lower realms, and with extremely intense happiness, day and night the ocean of merit pervading the sky is constantly increasing, therefore, through the path of good rebirth, one enters the good path, generating and riding the Bodhicitta like a chariot, this is the meaning to be understood. What is it like?
