The mind should be regarded as a great alchemical elixir that completely transforms everything into gold. That single measure of mercury cannot be exhausted by the thousand measures of iron, nor can it be transformed into iron. Similarly, the essence of generating the mind of perfect enlightenment, embraced by the wisdom of dedicating all roots of virtue, exhausts all the iron of karmic and afflictive obscurations and transforms all phenomena into the golden color of perfect enlightenment. However, that single essence of generating the mind of perfect enlightenment cannot be afflicted or exhausted by all the iron of karma and afflictions.' Therefore, those who desire wealth in cyclic existence should not hesitate or be confused. To indicate this, it is said, 'Leader of travelers,' and so forth. Cyclic existence itself is like a market, and the city where goods are bought and sold is the marketplace. Similarly, the place where goods are bought and sold through virtuous and non-virtuous actions is the marketplace of cyclic existence. Those who dwell in it are those who possess the nature of abiding. Therefore, to them it is said, 'Hey, those who dwell in the marketplace of cyclic existence, firmly grasp the precious bodhichitta!' Bodhichitta itself is precious, like a jewel. For example, just as a wish-fulfilling jewel pacifies the suffering of poverty and the lower realms, so too is this precious bodhichitta. The reason is that you, like merchants, seek to attain perfect happiness, so grasp this jewel with great reverence. Why? Because it is precious.
