It is said, "etc." and so on. The five meanings are considered by the wise to be the meaning of a husband, that is, the increase of merit and longevity, the increase of strength, the attainment of freedom from disease, the attainment of bodily happiness, praise, etc., are not needed by some of those. If it becomes one's own meaning, these will change, and understanding one's own meaning is to have wisdom, and for others it will become other, which is used for oneself. If one understands one's own meaning, it is also like that, but because it is not a method of understanding one's own meaning, it is not indicated separately. The so-called "intelligent" is also indicated because it is related to that occasion. Then, is there no mental happiness? Therefore, shouldn't it be grasped for sure? If you ask this, here it says "decoration etc." and so on. Mental happiness is mental pleasure, and if you only want those, you must rely on alcohol and gambling and prostitutes and other people's wives, etc. The mental happiness of hearing the Dharma, etc., is included in the merit mentioned, so there is no fault. Therefore, because of the cause of mental happiness, praise, etc., makes children happy, it is not something to be accepted. Even so, praise, etc., is the language of children, and for the sake of being called famous, it says "etc." and so on. Some ignorant people, even if such qualities reside far away from themselves, are praised by other beggars with the qualities of Indra, etc., with open-eyed faces, in order to pursue fame, they give away wealth such as elephants and horses like grass. Similarly, thinking in their hearts that they possess those qualities, they arise from victory over enemies like Indra, and the fame that they possess will spread widely, so they cling to it, and go to the battlefield to kill with unbearable difficulty. There is no need for this in the ultimate sense, because it is a reversed distinction in other respects, so it is indicated in this way. It says "with words and phrases" etc., what do the words and phrases, that is, the letters, that are said in praise etc., eat and smell?

English

Is that okay? If one dies for fame, then who benefits from the happiness that comes from hearing fame? Therefore, it is shown to be similar to children's games. It is said, "Sand," and so on. Some children are very happy and play to their heart's content with houses made of dust, but when some destroy them, they are seized by great suffering and tormented by extreme distress, crying out, "My house has been destroyed!" and wailing pitifully. Just like that example, it is said here as well. Similarly, if praise and fame diminish, that is, are destroyed, one's own mind, afflicted by suffering, appears like a child. If one examines carefully, here too, nothing that belongs to me has been destroyed by anyone, one should contemplate in this way. Another way to examine it is that this is like a child's words, as it is said in verses, "For a while," and so on. Sound is the nature of expression, and because it is an external object, it is without mind, and without mind, because its essence is that. That sound, the mind of praising me, that is, the thought of expressing my praise, is impossible, it cannot happen. How then can it make the mind happy? It is said, "To me, another," meaning one who is naturally considerate of others. "Fame" means that this too is meaningless, expressing unwillingness. "Happiness to me" is what is clearly desired. That is, if one thinks that that thought is the cause of happiness, then because that too is unrelated, it is merely a child's behavior. To show that it is unrelated, it is said, "Other," and so on. Because what comes of happiness to other sentient beings, or to me, existing in the continuum of others? It is of no benefit to me at all. Why? It is for that very reason. What happiness is, is the happiness of the one who praises, not of others. Therefore, a share is the happiness that exists in the continuum of others, and from that, only a little bit, that is, I do not obtain. Although that is so, bodhisattvas are happy because of the happiness of others, so why do they not obtain a share of that? Here it is said, "With happiness," and so on.
