The nature of non-peace is because the fire of hatred is always burning. Joy and happiness are unattainable and unfound, as they are suppressed by hatred. One cannot sleep, and without support, one cannot attain peace of mind, because the sting of hatred is rooted in the heart, tormenting the continuum of body and mind. Offering is reverence, through means such as gain and respect. Whatever follows, it means that servants wish to harm the hateful lord. Why? Because hatred is unfortunate and detestable, this is a statement of reason. Even friends become weary, because the hateful one is frightening. Even with generosity, the assembly of servants does not attend or follow. Why say more? Here, the word "in short" must be remembered, for those who find pleasure in anger, there is not even a little bit of the cause of peace. The place of harshness of mind is hatred. The action that arises from it is anger, because anger causes one to take up sticks and other weapons. Thus, although the two are different, by the fact that they must be abandoned, it is shown that they are not different. Likewise, in this life, having realized the faults of hatred, in order to abandon it, one should strive diligently, as it is said, "anger" and so on. As it is said, because it produces suffering. Those who are well-behaved, holding themselves firmly and intensely, meaning, by initiating diligence. That is happiness in this world and the next. Now, in order to destroy hatred, in order to destroy its cause, various distinctions are taught, such as "unwillingness" and so on. Desire and unwillingness arise from the clinging to self and what belongs to self. Bringing happiness to self and what belongs to self is desire, and the opposite of that is unwillingness. Therefore, these are produced through discrimination. But in ultimate truth, there is no such thing as desire or unwillingness. Therefore, due to the habit of perverse and intense clinging.

Because of doing what is not desired and destroying what is desired, there is unhappiness, and suffering arises in the mind. Therefore, hatred will arise towards those who do these things or act contrary to them. Therefore, one must be certain that food has power because it relies on unhappiness, and that hatred will destroy oneself, so one must first destroy the cause of increasing unhappiness. Destroying unhappiness will lead to happiness, because its root is destroyed, and destroying the root will prevent it from arising again. So, what is this extreme attachment that you speak of? It is said, "Like that," and so on. Because apart from harming oneself, there is nothing else to do day and night with this enemy of hatred. Therefore, one should repeatedly contemplate the faults of hatred and generate its antidote, patience, by all means. There are three types of patience, as explained in the Sutra of the Collection of Righteousness: namely, patience in accepting suffering, patience in firmly believing in the Dharma, and patience in not caring when others harm you. Now, for the moment, taking the example of patience in accepting suffering, it is said, "Whatever happens," and so on. The opposing factors of patience in accepting suffering are fear of suffering because of the occurrence of undesirable things, and attachment to happiness because of obstacles to desires. These cause unhappiness, and from this the mind becomes hateful or discouraged. Therefore, the Sutra of the Moon Lamp says: Do not be attached to happiness, and do not turn away from suffering. It is also said in the Sutra of the Jewel Cloud: Endure and accept inner sorrow, groaning, suffering, unhappiness, and agitation. Therefore, even if someone cuts off my head, I should not disturb my joy, and it should not arise from within. Joy is the antidote to unhappiness, because even if suffering arises, if the mind is full of joy, there is no opportunity for unhappiness. Therefore, in order to abandon unhappiness, one should strive to generate joy.

One should guard (the mind). Why? Even if one is displeased, if there is an obstacle to desire, the desire will not be fulfilled. What is desired will not be achieved. This has a special aspect, namely that virtue will decline. Joy is also highly praised in the "Noble Inexhaustible Wisdom Sutra." So, what is joy? It is joy in remembering the Buddha's teachings, joy in following remembrance, faith and extreme joy, the mind not being arrogant nor humble, the joy of having no desire, the joy of abandoning all desires, being the basis of all Dharma joys, extreme joy in the heart, extreme satisfaction in the body, joy and heart throbbing for the Buddha, joy and devotion to the body of the Tathagata, and so on, are widely proclaimed. Furthermore, it is said that displeasure arises from unfamiliarity. For example, "if," and so on. If there is another way to prevent obstacles to desire, or to correct unwanted occurrences, then why be displeased? One should strive to do that. If there is no way, then what is the use of being displeased? There is no use at all, because it is impossible, and those things are all past. Therefore, after careful consideration, eliminating displeasure is the best. Habit makes suffering harmless. To strongly prove this, one should strive. Suffering, etc., means that there are two kinds of suffering: physical harm and mental harm. Physical harm is caused by being struck by sticks, etc. Mental harm is caused by reasons such as insults. Insult is doing bad deeds. Harsh words are words that reveal the crux. Unpleasantness refers to not having fame, and speaks of lacking merit. All of these are undesirable. If it comes from others, isn't it good? Therefore, it is said: "To friends." For those friendly people whom one has committed to, it is the same for them and oneself. The maker of suffering, etc., that enemy will be repelled. For him, suffering, etc., is an obvious desire.
