It is like saying, "For the teachings, generate the perception of weapons, and for diligence, generate the perception of overcoming enemies." The reason for saying "One should always observe the Sutras" is to indicate it. The "this" mentioned here refers to the teachings indicated in this treatise, as well as those not indicated here, which are the trainings of the Bodhisattvas taught by the Buddha Bhagavan. One should understand the meanings of the various Sutras. This refers to the Sutras, such as the Mahayana Sutra 'Ratnamegha Sutra' and others. It is shown by "manifestation of training," training is the characteristic of what Bodhisattvas should adopt and what they should abandon. Because it is so, this difference is explained. "Space" and so on are explained, as it is said in the 'Arya Akashagarbha Sutra': the five root downfalls of a Kshatriya lineage who has been crowned from the head, similarly, one common root downfall, and similarly, the eight root downfalls of a beginner Bodhisattva. As it is said in the Sutra: Son of the lineage, there are five root downfalls of a Kshatriya lineage who has been crowned from the head. These root downfalls will turn all the previously accumulated roots of virtue of a Kshatriya lineage who has been crowned from the head into ashes, leading to failure, cutting off all the happiness of gods and humans, and causing them to fall into the lower realms. What are the five? Son of the lineage, a Kshatriya lineage who has been crowned from the head, if he steals the property of a stupa, or the property of the Sangha, or the property offered to the Sangha of the four directions, or instigates others to steal, this is the first root downfall. Similarly, abandoning the Dharma taught in the three vehicles is the second. From an ordained person who has taken full ordination, either taking away the robes of one who has broken the precepts, or causing him to return to lay life, or beating his body, or putting him in prison, or causing him to lose his life, this is the third. Committing any of the five heinous crimes is the fourth. Accepting wrong views and the path of the ten non-virtuous actions, or instigating others to accept them, is the fifth. Similarly, destroying towns and so on.

It is said that this is one commonality of all (Bodhisattva vows). It is said in that very text: "Sons or daughters of good family, for those who are beginners entering the Great Vehicle, there are eight root downfalls. Due to these root downfalls, for those who are beginners entering the Great Vehicle, all previously accumulated roots of virtue, etc., are as before." What are the eight? Some sentient beings previously behaved improperly, born in this defiled world of the five degenerations, those sentient beings have small roots of virtue, from "those sentient beings" to "among them, this extremely profound sutra containing emptiness," and in front of them, extensively recollect and proclaim. Those are ordinary people who have not diligently practiced, they will be afraid upon hearing, until "afraid." Turning away from the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, aspiring to the Bodhi of the Hearers, this is the first root downfall of a beginner Bodhisattva, due to that root downfall, etc., are as before. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should first know the thoughts and habitual tendencies of other sentient beings and people, and then gradually proclaim the Dharma according to the thoughts of sentient beings, rather than turning away from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment with skillful means, causing others to generate faith in the Lesser Vehicle, this is the second. Abandoning the vows of individual liberation, merely generating the mind of the Great Vehicle, and showing purity to others through reading it, this is the third. Proclaiming the Hearer Vehicle and other vehicles and their results, extremely showing faults, while for the Great Vehicle, extremely showing all purity, and causing others to also say these, this is the fourth. Due to fame and gain, etc., engaging in reading the Great Vehicle, etc., similarly, due to these reasons, speaking words that belittle and slander others, praising oneself, acknowledging human dharma as superior, this is the fifth. Merely through reading, showing the realization of profound Dharma, and causing others to also correctly accept it, this is the sixth. Royal lineage...
