It is said in Liberation: Furthermore, if someone comes to ask for a begging bowl and Dharma robes, if he has more than the three Dharma robes given by the Buddha, he should give and donate them accordingly. If he has less than three Dharma robes, then he should not completely abandon what he relies on to abide in pure conduct. Why is that? Because the Thus-Gone One has said that the three Dharma robes should not be abandoned. Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva completely abandons the three Dharma robes and mainly gives to beggars, then he will not be practicing contentment, so he is forbidden from giving excessively. Furthermore, in order to show the protection of oneself, he said, "The Holy Dharma," and so on. The holy ones, that is, the holy beings, the Bodhisattvas, or the Holy Dharma, that is, accomplishing benefit and happiness for others, both worldly and beyond worldly. In order to show it, one should not torment the body for the sake of a slight reason, otherwise a great mass of benefit will be damaged. Therefore, these are the words of the previous argument. Why is it so? Because this very gentle diligence increases and is able to quickly accomplish benefit and happiness for all sentient beings. Because of that, it is forbidden to give away one's own body and head, and so on. When is it forbidden? When the mind of compassion is not pure, which applies equally to friends, non-friends, others, and all impoverished beings. Even if one exerts too much diligence, it will harm the benefit of oneself and others. For those who have the intention of engaging equally or more in oneself and others, there is no prohibition. Likewise, one should not abandon or not abandon what obstructs the path to enlightenment and hearing the Dharma, etc., for oneself and others. For the sake of sentient beings, if one has more or equal ability, and if a Bodhisattva has more or equal ability, one should not abandon or not abandon what obstructs virtue, it is said, and thus it is established. With this in mind, it is said in the Pratimoksha of the Bodhisattva: Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who goes forth from the household life
