When abiding thus, even now, it is indeed the ability to benefit sentient beings. What is it? At all times, with speech that is not harsh but gentle, moderate, and not disturbing, fortunate beings will admire, and those worthy of being embraced will arise. As it is said, these are the true collections of the Bodhisattva's Dharma. If one does not act in this way, what harm is there? If they are not worthy of being embraced, then the sprout of the world's victors is despised. Like a fire covered by ashes, sentient beings are burned in hells and so forth. Thus it is said. Therefore, making sentient beings happy is indeed the work of a Bodhisattva. The field of benefiting is the uncommon cause of the arising of merit, so in addition to that, others are also shown, such as saying "always." What arises from manifest clinging is what arises from the strong faith of having made them one's chosen deity. On the side of antidotes, it is what arises from meditating on emptiness and so forth, which are antidotes to afflictions. The field of qualities is the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and so forth. The field of benefiting is parents and so forth. The field of suffering is the sick and so forth. Even doing a little for them will cause the cause of immeasurable merit to arise. Bodhisattvas should also become accustomed to this, as it is said. "Wise" and so forth, is to practice giving at all times. Being endowed with rising up is for the sake of abandoning laziness, that is, becoming endowed with diligence. For that very reason, one should do everything oneself, and not rely on others for any task. This is what is shown in places such as "when distinguishing." When practicing the perfections, in order to abandon meaningless things, it is said to gradually practice giving and so forth. From higher to higher, ethics are superior to giving, patience is superior to ethics, and so forth. Therefore, one should not abandon the latter as the cause of the former, thinking that one should not rely on what contradicts it. Is it in all aspects or not? "Conduct" is said, the conduct of Bodhisattvas, whatever is the training, vows, and nature, that itself is guarding the stream of virtue.

It was done for (them). Therefore, the so-called "other than..." means "except for...". Then, how can it not decline? It is for the sake of doing things. Therefore, wanting to accumulate merit, (one should) be dominated by compassion for others, (the Buddha) said that everything is for the sake of doing things. Saying "like that" and so on, it means that, like that, having realized the unsurpassed (Bodhi), in order to accomplish the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, one should constantly initiate diligence. Then, for those who engage in preventing (virtuous deeds), how is it that it is not considered a transgression of downfall? Because the Blessed One allows some prevention (of virtuous deeds) to be appropriate, this is in accordance with the teachings of the Blessed One. But it is not applicable to all (situations), but rather to enter the state of having great compassion, that is, reaching the ultimate of great compassion. Becoming their puppet, having the same interest in the benefit of others, and looking back at one's own needs. Like this, arising from wisdom and compassion, entering into the business of benefiting others with skillful means, there will be no downfall. Here, too, one should understand the distinction between downfall and non-downfall from the questions of the attendant (Ananda). Similarly, in the Sutra of Skillful Means, (one should) understand the part where the Brahmin boy is dominated by the stars, and the part of downfall and non-downfall. This refers to protecting oneself, in order to show protecting oneself with medicine and clothing, etc., he said "wrong livelihood" and so on. One should completely protect one's body with medicine and clothing, etc., for the benefit of others. Just like what was said before. Among them, there are two types of medicine: medicine that is taken constantly and medicine that treats diseases. Among them, the medicine that is taken constantly is food, etc. When entering the village, in order to actually use food in (daily) behavior, one should, as said before, keep mindfulness on the precepts and walk. Then, divide the food obtained from alms into four parts, and it should be properly distributed to those who have fallen, those who are helpless, and those who abide in asceticism. One part is given to those who have fallen, the second part is given to those who are helpless, the third part is given to those who practice Brahmacharya, and the fourth part is eaten by oneself.

This should be done. When eating, one should eat without desire, not being attached, not being greedy, not being fixated. Otherwise, one should eat only enough to maintain and nourish this body. One should eat in such a way that one does not become too thin or too obese. Why is that? If one is too thin, one will turn away from virtue. If the body is too obese, one will be overwhelmed by sleep. Therefore, having eaten these alms, one should manifestly turn towards virtue, as stated in the Holy Jewel Cloud. The Holy Jewel Heap Sutra also states that when eating, one should generate this thought: May the eighty thousand types of worms in this body be happy by this means. In this way, they should be gathered with material things. Having attained enlightenment, they should be gathered with the Dharma, as explained extensively in the sutra. Again, in the same sutra, it says: Light Protector, I give with faith to two things, which two? Reason and emptiness. In this way, all enjoyments should be blessed for the benefit of all sentient beings. Otherwise, if one enjoys out of attachment to oneself, defilements and downfalls will arise. As stated in the Moon Lamp Sutra: Those who obtain delicious food and merit, do not diligently practice yoga, but only eat and drink. For them, that food becomes poison, like a calf licking a lotus root. These contents can be widely consulted in the Compendium of Trainings. Regarding eating and drinking, there are three ways: at fixed times, daily, and until the end of life. These are also explained in the monastic discipline for monks, and should be understood from there. Regarding clothes and other things that protect the body, the sutra says that one can give away everything except the three Dharma robes. If some Bodhisattvas come to beg for a bowl and Dharma robes, one should not give excessively. However, what the Blessed One has allowed, what is suitable for practitioners, anything beyond the three Dharma robes, can be given to beggars, otherwise do not give. The individual Bodhisattva...
