This should be done. How should it be done? It is said to be like wood, because the function of the eyes and so on is empty. To make this clearer, for "fruitless" and so on, slightly open the eyes and focus on the tip of the nose, or look like a yoke, this is when first starting. In order to become accustomed to it constantly, in order to abandon fatigue, it is said "watching" and so on, in order to abandon watching and discouragement, occasionally look in all directions in intervals. If one out of a hundred people approaches, then know the manner of his arrival, and say, "Are you coming well?" To look in order to say coming. Otherwise, mocking him there will cause non-virtue to arise. Walking on the road, also look like that, in order to eliminate harm, it is said "road" and so on, in order to know the source of terror, thieves and so on, according to the order of watching. Otherwise, the body will not be protected. When looking in all directions, in order to abandon the harm of agitation, one should do it sitting down. When looking back, one should turn around well and look back. In order to protect samadhi, it is said "front" and so on, walking is forward, coming is backward, one should watch for the harm of cliffs and so on. If, through the key points of the order of such instruction, one understands the benefit and necessity of oneself and others, then practice becomes the essence. Seventh chapter. Now, in order to learn the activity of mindfulness, it is said "body" and so on, in any of the four activities, the body is like this, that is, abiding by standing or sitting, and immediately after that, starting the activity of recitation and so on, and then observing again how the body abides. In that activity itself, or in another activity. If it is in another activity, one should abide well as before. After speaking of the separate observation of the body, the separate observation of the mind, it is said "mind" and so on, for oneself and others.

Thinking about the Dharma, which is characterized by benefit, is the great root, because it is the cause of liberation from bonds. Therefore, one should repeatedly examine what it depends on. As it is said, "How," and so on. Also, "Where does my mind wander?" Thus, examine the previous object of focus, or examine it as the object of focus. If you realize it has wandered, then return from there and bind it there. If it flows naturally, then let it go. Thus, one should hold it as if one does not even feel the burden of tranquility for a single moment. For the time being, these are teachings that discipline is what accomplishes samadhi. As it is said in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp: "The samadhi without afflictions is quickly attained; that is the benefit of pure discipline." Thus it is said. Therefore, whatever actions become the cause of samadhi, one should know that those foods are in accordance with discipline. Therefore, one who seeks samadhi as important should have the state of mindfulness and awareness. Similarly, one who seeks discipline as important should strive for samadhi. When completely abandoning samadhi, as it is said, "Fear," and so on. Fear is the burning of fire, and so on. Similarly, offering to the Three Jewels, and so on, is a celebration. Therefore, even the benefit of the most excellent sentient beings, and so on, is acceptable. When those arise, if one cannot remain, then at that time, act as desired, thus giving permission, meaning that it will not become a downfall. Also, why is this uncertain? As it is said, "Like this," and so on. In any case, discipline is more excellent than generosity, but even so, after learning other trainings, immediately for the later trainings, because there is no clear habituation, how can one not fall even if one departs from there for that period of time? This is the time for generosity, not the time for discipline, therefore it is said, "If one cannot." These are merely examples. As it is said: There, completing one training, if one has not become accustomed to the later training, then one cannot...

It has been shown that there is no falling. It is also said in the Sutra of the Holy Inexhaustible Intellect: 'When giving, one should gather the precepts and maintain equanimity.' Therefore, do not relax. Whatever virtuous practice you engage in, if some samadhi becomes an obstacle, then it should not be accepted. Therefore, it is said 'thinking about what' and so on. According to one's own reason and scriptures, or the instructions of a virtuous spiritual friend, after determining, one should devote oneself to whatever one has slightly begun to do, such as meditation and contemplation, and first accomplish it. Before it is accomplished, one should not completely abandon it and begin to do something else. If it is not so, what fault will there be? It is said 'If it is so' and so on. Because by striving in this way, everything will be done well, and conversely, it will be unrelated to both what was promised before and what was vowed later. Unstable entry will increase with the following of non-wisdom. Even so, it is said that one should abandon what is fruitless. 'Idle talk' is said to be and so on, one should avoid saying all kinds of unrelated words, and participating in all the amazing things that others have done, or even oneself, in order to watch and listen, and to engage one's speech and mind in them. Furthermore, in order to abandon what is fruitless, one should practice what is taught in the Pratimoksha. 'Digging the ground meaninglessly' is said to be and so on, using fingernails and sticks etc. to draw lines and write on the ground and paper etc. unnecessary things will become a cause of falling. Therefore, one should remember the instructions of the Blessed One to avoid these, and completely abandon them, because here one fears the ripening of the fruit. 'At that moment' is not to let that time pass. The teaching on being mindful in all afflictive actions is shown by the seven verses beginning with 'When'. 'When' etc., is said after first examining one's own mind, it is about all afflic
