Among beings, dwelling with such mindfulness, it is extremely difficult to restrain desires, therefore, it is said to be called "guarding diligent reliance," that is, one must definitely contemplate on this mindfulness. Not degenerating, that is, the mindfulness of guarding the precepts will not be confused. Moreover, in order to firmly show that it is appropriate to do so, "I," etc., are declared. The meaning is, obtaining Dharma robes and alms, etc., losing them is fine, being destroyed is also fine. My desire is as desired. Respect is offering with reverence, such as laying out seats and prostrating to the feet. Body and life, that is, all these are fine to lose, and also other things, happiness and, whatever causes mental happiness, let them be lost. My virtuous mind must not be allowed to degenerate at any time. Furthermore, in order to generate respect here, the author of the treatise declared "mind," etc. Join palms and pray. For what purpose? That is, mindfulness and clear knowing, not just mindfulness, nor just clear knowing, meaning, one's own benefit depends on each other. Among them, mindfulness is declared in the Noble Jewel Crest Sutra: With what mindfulness, all afflictions will not arise; with what mindfulness, the opportunity for all demonic actions will not be opened; with what mindfulness, one will not go astray or into evil paths; like a doorkeeper, with what mindfulness will not open the opportunity for all unwholesome minds and mental factors, this is called correct mindfulness. In short, mindfulness is this: for both permission and prohibition, remembering as appropriate is called mindfulness, because mindfulness does not forget the object, so it is shown. Clear knowing is also declared in the Prajnaparamita: When walking, one also knows that I am walking, when standing, one also knows that I am standing, when sitting, one also knows that I am sitting, when lying down, one also knows that I am lying down. His body, however it abides, knows it as it is. Similarly, combine, he walks.

Going and coming are also practiced with mindfulness. Looking and truly looking, contracting and stretching, monastic robes and alms bowls, washing and alms bowls, holding monastic robes, eating and drinking, engaging in sexual activity, sleeping, abandoning vows, coming, going, standing, sitting, falling asleep and not falling asleep, speaking and not speaking, when abiding inwardly in the right way, one practices with mindfulness. From this very point, it is also said, The state of body and mind, Observing again and again, This alone, in brief, Is the characteristic of guarding mindfulness. It will be explained thus. If asked, "If there are no teachings on how to guard these, what faults are there?" The answer is that the content beginning with "disease" has been spoken. Just as a person whose strength is weakened by disease becomes incapable of all activities, that is, for all activities such as going and feasting, similarly, a mind without mindfulness and awareness is the same for all activities that are the characteristics of meditation and recitation. After pointing out the faults of combining these, in order to explain the faults of lacking each one individually, the content beginning with "without mindfulness" has been spoken. What is "without mindfulness"? It is one who does not possess mindfulness, which is "without mindfulness." If a sentient being possesses this, then even though they fully understand things with the wisdom arising from hearing, thinking, and meditating, they do not abide in memory. That is the root of all virtuous qualities. What is it like? It is like a pot with a hole in it, where water poured in from the mouth flows downward and does not stay. Furthermore, the fault of lacking this, the content beginning with "possessing learning" has been spoken. "Much" means one who has heard much. Likewise, those who have faith, who are diligent, that is, who are respectful of the training, etc., will also become tainted with the fault of lacking mindfulness, and will become defiled with the impurity of falling into transgression, because they cannot distinguish between the actions of body and mind. The fault of lacking that, furthermore, the content beginning with "without mindfulness" has been spoken. "Without mindfulness" means one who is separated from mindfulness. The nature of afflictive things is a thief, because it steals the wealth of virtue. That steals memory
