Because of following the objects of forgetfulness, the mindfulness that should be guarded and protected is taken away, which means losing the wealth of virtue. Even if merit is accumulated, and the wealth of virtue is accumulated, one will still tend towards the lower realms. What is the reason for this? Because it is said that afflictions, which illuminate the meaning of the teachings, and so on, are like gangs of robbers and thieves, seeking opportunities. Like meat-eaters, they observe the path of opportunity, looking for faults, and so on. Once they find an opportunity, and encounter the act of intrusion, they steal the roots of virtue. Therefore, they destroy the opportunity to obtain a good rebirth, because there is no accumulation of goodness. Now, speaking according to the power of mindfulness, because of "therefore" and so on, why would there be such faults from the absence of mindfulness? Because seeing this fault here, mindfulness is the nature of not forgetting the object. From the mind-door, from the entrance door of the mind's house, do not abandon it, do not discard it, but always abide in it, that is its meaning. If there are a hundred instances of carelessness, and it departs from there, even if it departs at that time, return again, bring it close, and entrust it and abide there. How to abide? Remember the harm of the lower realms, that is, remember the harm of hells and other lower realms, and abide in the mind. Therefore, in order to abandon the fruitless actions of these twelve kinds of mindfulness, in order to protect without transgressing the teachings of the Tathagata, and to have respectful mindfulness towards the ripening result, and so on, it is explained in detail in the Compendium of Trainings, and should be taken separately from there. That mindfulness also arises from strong respect. Respect also arises from understanding the great nature of tranquility and gladly accepting it, and those should be explained as appropriate. For some people, mindfulness may also arise in other ways, and in order to explain that, it is said "the Lama and" and so on, be close to the Acharya and Khenpo, or other than that, be close to the Brahmachari who should not be despised, that is, associate with them. The fear that follows the teachings is the fear caused by it.

It is also so. Reverence is a condition supported by all things; it is the antidote to overcome contempt. One who does this is a wise person endowed with diligence. What is subsequently taught is that mindfulness can ascertain what is beneficial and what is not, and can effortlessly recall the past. If one abides in this way, mindfulness and attention will abide for a long time. This is taught in two verses. The so-called Buddhas, etc., refer to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who possess the wisdom eyes that can see all realms of phenomena without obstruction at all times, and the appearances of all phenomena are present before their eyes at all times. Like all phenomena, I am also before their eyes. Keep this in mind, and like that, well restrain yourself and abide. The so-called being ashamed, respectful, and fearful, refers to subduing inappropriate behavior with shame, respecting the training with reverence, and not transgressing the training with fear. Here, being ashamed, etc., should be understood as referring to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If one does that, there will be other superior qualities as well. Therefore, it is said, "That is." Abiding in that way, even unwillingly, one can recall the Buddha in every moment. It is said that the cause of arising and relying on with mindfulness is also mindfulness. It is said, "When," etc. Whenever mindfulness, like a gatekeeper, prevents the assembly of thieves of afflictions from entering through the gate of the mind, then mindfulness will also arise effortlessly. Arising will also become reliance. Therefore, let us first discuss the following and opposing of these, and the merits and faults of each, and for the sake of abandoning meaninglessness, let us temporarily abandon meaningless actions, and it is said, "Temporarily," etc. First, one should contemplate inwardly, "A mind that is temporarily like this." One should constantly and always abide near such a teaching order, and for the sake of abandoning fruitless conduct other than that, One should gather all the conceptual thoughts that are separated from the aggregates of sense faculties and grasp fruitless objects such as form, and I shall abide.
