I, just as one closely enjoys and fully enjoys with various kinds of implements and enjoyments, so too, I shall extensively sustain all sentient beings with this body composed of the four great elements, through various doors, various names, various aims, various implements, and various enjoyments, thus extensively declared. Starting from what is called "precious mind," etc., know that all these are preliminary preparations for harming the mind of enlightenment. Having made offerings and given away the body, etc., in this way, and realizing that obtaining perfect and complete bliss is extremely rare due to the perfection of the benefits of the mind of enlightenment, one should firmly establish the root of faith. For sentient beings who are without refuge and without friends, having compassion and not caring for one's own happiness, but suffering because of the suffering of others, those who have the thought and intention of removing that suffering, having clearly seen these methods of the Buddha himself, one should distribute it in this way: If I and others also do not want fear and suffering, then what is the difference between me and others? Thinking, why protect that one and not protect this one? Therefore, wishing to completely eliminate the suffering of myself and all sentient beings, and also wishing to go to the end of happiness, having strengthened the root of faith, one should also strengthen the mind towards enlightenment. Striving to generate the mind of enlightenment towards perfect and complete enlightenment, as it is said, "How in the past," etc. Or, with what thought for the sake of abandoning all the suffering of all sentient beings, or how the Blessed One knows how to uphold it. Regarding "the mind of enlightenment": Enlightenment is the Buddha himself, because he has abandoned all obscurations, including habitual tendencies. He has realized that all phenomena are without inherent existence. This will also be explained in detail in the chapter on wisdom. There, the mind is to be obtained through superior intention, therefore one should contemplate, meaning: for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, may I become a Buddha. In this way, the first half shows the generation of the mind of enlightenment.

From here, the explanation of taking the vows of discipline begins: "Bodhisattva" and so on are explained. The discipline of Bodhisattvas is what Bodhisattvas should always practice after generating the mind of enlightenment, which is the meaning of "to them." "Gradually" means in order. When the initial practitioner is first able to do something, it is what should be done temporarily, thinking that what is difficult is not what should be done. The intermediate stage should also be understood in the same way, because the mind of compassion is not pure, one should not abandon this body, which is what will be explained. Similarly, one should also consider others. Now, the explanation of taking the vows oneself: In "Thus" etc., "like them" or "like those." Taking the vows is also received from the perspective of cultivating the Bodhisattva's discipline, diligently practicing, and having discipline. Having done so, if one transcends the discipline, one will be very ashamed, and fear of being deceived by the lama will also arise, so for this, there is no need to force it, and joy and reverence will be accomplished, this is the general outline of the law of discipline. Therefore, Bodhisattvas, in the presence of the Tathagata, must vow to accomplish any discipline they desire. Therefore, those who wish to take vows should pray to a virtuous friend, and speak truthfully according to what he says, reciting with a very focused mind. Please listen, teacher, recite "I, named so-and-so," as stated in the *Array of the Pure Land of Mañjuśrī*: The Tathagata should generate the mind of enlightenment with conduct, as stated in the past realization of the noble Mañjuśrī. He should say this: Samsara has no end, as long as there is an end to the past, for the benefit of sentient beings, I will practice immeasurable conduct. In the presence of the protector of the world, I generate the perfect mind of enlightenment. I will be the servant of all beings, freeing them from poverty and suffering. Until I attain enlightenment, I will be free from harmful thoughts and
