Do it with effort. If so, cultivating the self will exhaust self-grasping, and therefore it will be possible to reverse samsara. If so, what is the use of cultivating selflessness? (The scripture says) "The cause of suffering" and so on. Just as the ignorance of the fruit is the cause of pacifying suffering, similarly, the second ignorance of self is not. Because of its existence, self-grasping will not be exhausted. And again, there will be ignorance of self, because it will be seen as the opposite of selflessness. And pride will increase, and increase will be close to arising. What will it become like? It is the cause of suffering, that is, the suffering of samsara, the cause of the three sufferings of samsara, the cause of action. It is also hoped that suffering will be pacified from the exhaustion of self-grasping. If there is a view of self, how can this be prevented? Because if the power of the cause is not complete, the fruit cannot be prevented. Therefore, suffering will not be prevented either. In this way, because of seeing the self, there will arise the thought of clinging to the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of conditioned phenomena as self. Therefore, wanting to remedy suffering, concealing the faults of wanting happiness, striving for that purpose, fabricating it as merit, therefore one will engage in those accomplishments, and the thought will arise, "This is beneficial to me." Because of seeing "I" and "self," it will become an obstructing hatred. Therefore, all the afflictions and near afflictions that are the cause of all suffering will be obtained and increased. Thus, because of extreme involvement in ignorance of self, it will become the self-grasping that is the cause of suffering. It is said, in the presence of the scholar: "Whoever accepts seeing the self will cling to permanence. Because of clinging, happiness will be hidden, and because of craving, faults will be hidden. Craving sees merit, and accepts the accomplishment of 'mine.' Therefore, as long as there is a self beforehand, that is when there is samsara. If there is a self, one will also know others. One will have attachment and hatred towards self and others. From these and everything related, all faults will arise." Thus it was said. In this way, the self-grasping that clings to the self cannot be prevented. From there also prevent.

After "what if," "even better than that" means better than seeing self. Irreversible means unable to be reversed. If there is clinging to self, then at that time, meditating on selflessness is supreme. Selflessness means being separated from persons and so on, and meditation means habituation. Supreme means principal, because not engaging in the view of self is the cause of reversing self-grasping. This too will be put aside for a while and then abandoned later, because it is focused on objects. In this way also, from the completion of the best meditation, because of directly seeing selflessness, the view of the aggregates that contradicts it will be reversed. When that is reversed, because there is no seeing of following as one, it is seeing only a moment of the later and earlier being empty in nature. Therefore, because of being free from imputation to the earlier and later, there is no seeing of even a little else that accomplishes future happiness for the self. Therefore, attachment will not arise to any object. There will also be no hatred towards what contradicts that, because there is no clinging itself. There is also no seeing of the one who harms as the place of harming to be taken, because there is no second moment for those two, whoever harms whom. It is not reasonable to destroy other enemies because of having realization when others harm. It is also to whomever it was done by. Thus, when desire and so on are reversed, other afflictions and near afflictions arising from that will not arise. For objects, there is no harming to be done and harming to be done, but rather because of focusing on dependent origination, saying, "This arises in dependence on this." In this way also, one will not engage in afflictions with emptiness of persons and reversal of the view of the aggregates, because the root has been cut. As it is said in the Noble Secret Sutra of the Thus-Gone One: "Peaceful intelligence, this is like this: when the root of a tree is cut, all the branches, leaves, and petals will wither. Peaceful intelligence, likewise, when the view of the aggregates is pacified, all afflictions will be pacified." Thus it is said. Therefore, meditating on selflessness is supreme.
