If someone asks, 'Is it said that external objects appear as forms such as elephants?' The answer is, 'It is indeed said.' However, the nature of mind itself is consciousness. 'That' refers to the characteristic of having a bright appearance by grasping objects and so on in a disconnected manner. 'Form' is appearance. 'Other' refers to the other form of the internal grasping mind. 'Existing' means possessing, which is the thing itself. 'If again' refers to stating an accepted view, to show that even so, this is not a connection. (In the sutra) it says, 'When the mind itself is like an illusion,' and so on. The nature of mind itself is consciousness, which has already been acknowledged. When the knower, which is no different from illusion, is not different from the mind, there is no such thing as the 'former,' because its nature is such, so it is acknowledged that it appears as such. 'Then who sees with what?' means, who will realize with what? Only seeing itself exists, but there is no object to be seen. Without an object to be seen, seeing does not exist either, because seeing depends on the object to be seen. Therefore, no one can see anything, so it is thought that all beings will attain a state of blindness. Even so, if the nature of knowledge is not experience, however, by experiencing one's own nature through self-awareness, one can also realize the illusion and so on that are inseparable from it. Even so, there will be no loss at all. This is the idea spoken by the consciousness theorists in the ultimate sense. The protector of the world also said, 'The nature of the world is empty,' and so on. When it is explained by reasoning that the nature of beings is empty, who will realize the nature of what with what? The Blessed One said that all dharmas are empty, the characteristic of emptiness is mind, all dharmas are tranquil, and the characteristic of tranquility is also mind. Furthermore, the protector of the world also said and gave instructions. The world refers to all sentient beings, and the protector refers to the occasion.

Thus spoke the Buddha, the Bhagavan. What did he say? He said that mind cannot see mind, the nature of mind is not known by mind, although a thing is itself, it is contradictory to act on itself. What is it like? It is said, "The sword's edge does not cut itself," just as the very sharp edge of a sword cannot cut its own body as it cuts other things, because it is contradictory to act on itself. Similarly, the mind is like the edge of a sword, one's own mind cannot see itself, it should be understood in this way. A single consciousness should not have three aspects: the object to be known, the subject that knows, and the nature of knowing, because it is not appropriate for a single partless entity to have three natures. In this regard, the Sutra of the Noble Jewel Crest says: When searching for the mind everywhere, one does not truly see the mind within, nor does one truly see the mind outside. Also, one does not truly see the mind in the aggregates, nor does one truly see the mind in the elements. One does not truly see the mind in the sense bases. Because one does not truly see the mind, one seeks everywhere for the origin of the mind, thinking, 'The mind arises from having an object of focus.' One thinks again, 'Is that object of focus different, and the mind different? Or is the object of focus itself the mind?' If the object of focus is different and the mind is different, then the mind becomes two. But if the object of focus is the mind itself, how can the mind see the mind? The mind cannot see the mind. For example, just as the edge of a sword cannot cut itself, and the tip of a finger cannot touch itself, so the mind cannot see itself. Thus it is explained extensively. Here, the Mind-Only proponents, in order to eliminate the contradiction of acting on oneself, and in order to establish their own doctrine, give examples such as a lamp, etc. One's own thing is one's own nature, like a lamp.

Just like a lamp, it illuminates and manifests perfectly. In this way, it is indeed to understand objects such as vases obscured by darkness that a lamp is lit. Similarly, it is not another lamp that is needed to illuminate a lamp. However, that which illuminates vases and the like also illuminates itself. Similarly, the self-awareness that is being discussed should also be understood in this way, without any contradiction, and should be applied universally. Therefore, if someone says that it is without contradiction, like a lamp, then one should not say this. Why? Because it is said that a lamp and so on, it is not itself something to be illuminated, just like a vase and so on, it is not at all something to be illuminated. Because a lamp is not obscured by darkness, it is not covered by darkness. Eliminating what obscures is illumination. Therefore, vases and the like are illuminated because they originally exist. But a lamp is not like that, because it did not exist before. It is not reasonable to illuminate what does not exist, because it is itself non-existent. Therefore, in this way, a lamp is not something to be illuminated, because it is different in this way. The example of a lamp does not establish the point to be proven. Even if that were the case, how could it be said, as in 'like a lamp' and so on, that the nature of a lamp is to illuminate what is obscured by darkness? One should not say this, but rather one should say that it is merely in accordance with its own nature, not dependent on others. To illustrate this, it is said, 'like crystal' and so on. The reason for saying 'is' is that, just as a crystal stone is not blue in nature, but in order to produce the quality of blueness, it needs to rely on other causes, especially being close to blue petals and so on. Similarly, if an object is blue in itself, then in order to make it blue, it does not need to rely on other special conditions. Likewise, some objects such as vases can be seen to be illuminated by relying on other things such as lamps, but some things such as lamps do not rely on other things, but are themselves.
