To the one who has attained the supreme state of perfect peace, I bow down and will explain his commentary with clear words in sequence. Where does the teacher Shantideva, the treasure of virtues, clarify? It is the conduct spoken by those who have reached the other shore of the great ocean of scriptures. How can I, who am foolish, express its meaning? However, because of the goodness of habituating wisdom, it is incomparable, therefore I enter into it. The habit of some small virtues is without wisdom, and I have not accumulated the virtue of pride. But even so, because the noble spiritual friend is shown, the fruit is such that the words are greatly expanded. Among them, relying on some differences of lineage, merely by relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, all beings belonging to the three realms, all sentient beings tormented by suffering transformed by suffering, in order to be liberated from all suffering, disregarding their own suffering, think like this: the means of its pacification is the Buddha. Desiring to obtain this result, generating the great nature of bodhicitta, in order to perfect the accumulation of the two accumulations, which is the means of accomplishing the Sugata, one gradually engages in generosity and so on. When one acts in this way, if one is in harmony with calm abiding, then thinking that merely by generosity and so on, which are devoid of wisdom, one cannot become the cause of accomplishing the benefit of beings, nor can one attain Buddhahood, therefore, desiring to be liberated from the suffering of samsara, one should strive to generate wisdom. As it is said: "With the superior insight of well-endowed calm abiding," and so on. Having taught calm abiding, now, in order to teach the superior insight obtained after that, which is called the perfection of wisdom, therefore, he said, "All these limbs," and so on. "These" refers to generosity and so on, which have the characteristics mentioned in this treatise. "This" is to examine what is manifest. "These limbs" are retinues, categories, and synonyms for collections. The way of speaking and expressing, and others, are said for the sake of wisdom. It is related to "obtained for the sake of wisdom." What is wisdom?

The nature of dependent arising of things that abide as such is that of thoroughly distinguishing the suchness, and that itself is the meaning, because it correctly guides the cause of enlightenment, therefore, whatever branch of the nature of generosity and so on is necessary, that is what is said. Because among the things of generosity and other perfections, wisdom of the nature of distinguishing dharmas is the main thing. Thus, generosity is the first cause for obtaining the enlightenment of the Buddha, because it belongs to the accumulation of merit. Moreover, if one continuously maintains discipline, then through the good realms, the near needs of the enjoyment of happiness will arise completely, therefore it is the cause of the arising of unsurpassed wisdom. Patience is also the antidote to anger, which is its incompatible side, and it protects the nature of the roots of virtue that have been well practiced with generosity and discipline, and it is diligently engaged in order to obtain happiness. This, which is said to be the accumulation of merit arising from the three, generosity and so on, is also good, and what arises from meditation and so on is called the accumulation of wisdom, and these will not arise without diligence, therefore it is also the cause of both accumulations, and it arises in order to abandon all practices. By equally placing the mind, one will know what is truly like, therefore the perfection of meditation also becomes the cause of obtaining unsurpassed wisdom. Thus, even if generosity and so on are practiced with reverence, if they lack wisdom, they will not become the cause of obtaining the unsurpassed state, and they will not even obtain the name of perfection, relying on what has been purified by wisdom, therefore it will also enter into the vast without interruption, and when one enters after it, one will obtain the thing of its cause. One will also obtain the name of perfection. Similarly, the giver, the object of giving, and the receiver, and so on, the three, with the practice of non-attachment, completely subdued by wisdom, with reverence and immeasurable, practiced for a long time, then...
