This is for the cautious. In this context, for the meaning of caution, it is the speech that dispels carelessness. Remembering the treatises that show that meaning, that is, keeping it in mind, then one will not be confused about the meaning of how to act. It can dispel sleep and drowsiness. Drowsiness is the withering of the body, which is a synonym for "laziness." Sleep is when sleep makes the mind inferior. When dispelling that, one should follow the actions of the wise, which is related to it. Thus, having abandoned the aspects that are contrary to samadhi, one should focus solely on samadhi. To show this meaning, the words "therefore" and so on are spoken. Obstructions are afflictions and so on. Cutting off means wanting to abandon them in the way that will be explained. One should connect with samadhi, that is, calm abiding. In what way? Therefore, the words "from the wrong path" and so on are spoken. That is, from the previously mentioned thoughts of desire and so on. Or, the wrong path refers to afflictions such as laziness. How to briefly summarize? The faults of all samadhis are six types, namely: laziness, unclear focus on the object, sinking, excitement, non-application, and application. The antidotes to these should be cultivated with the intention of abandoning them. That is: faith, desire, diligence, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Among these, the first four are the antidotes to laziness. Thus, with the faith of the nature of having great confidence in the qualities of samadhi, the yogi generates great desire in that. From great desire, diligence arises. From the power of diligence, body and mind become workable, from which is the pliant body and mind, which can dispel laziness. Therefore, one should cultivate faith and so on in order to cut off laziness. Mindfulness focuses on the object, which is the antidote to forgetfulness. Awareness is the antidote to sinking and excitement, in order to truly manifest the qualities. When sinking and excitement are completely pacified, non-application is also a fault. As an antidote to that, sinking and excitement are completely pacified.

Therefore, one should cultivate the mind. When the mind is difficult to subdue, effort is a fault. Now, to counteract this, one should cultivate equanimity. Samadhi, which is associated with these eight practices of abandonment, will become an excellent and usable thing, as has been extensively explained. Therefore, one should withdraw and restrain the mind from the wrong path. This is the explanation of the union of the deeds of the noble ones. What is its nature? It is to be constantly focused on the correct object. Whether in a concise or extensive way, as long as the mind can remain stable on a certain object, that is steadfastness. To offer the mind in a non-conflicting way is to be free from obstacles. This is the expression of the nature of meditative stabilization. Because the mind is of the nature of being one-pointed. It also speaks of the union of non-distraction. The order of accomplishing the cultivation of calm abiding is also clearly shown in Kamalashila's 'Stages of Meditation'. There it is said that, abiding in the aggregates of calm abiding such as morality, in places agreeable to the mind, one should make prostrations to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. One should also confess sins and rejoice in merits, and with the intention of liberating all beings, manifest great compassion. Sitting on a comfortable seat, straightening the body, sitting in the lotus position, one should generate samadhi. First, one should briefly examine any object, until in whatever way, all objects are included, and the mind can remain stable on that. Again, in brief, all things are divided into two types, form and formlessness. Regarding this, in order to avoid the fault of distraction for beginners, one should temporarily focus on the concise. If the mind becomes tame, then one should analyze it by distinguishing between aggregates and elements, and also focus on the extensive. Until certainty is obtained from that, one should also bind the continuum of the mind to that which includes all things. When, in the meantime, desire and the like cause the mind to be distracted to external objects, one should be aware of the distraction.
