Sala! After quickly pacifying distractions by meditating on the unattractive, etc., one should quickly withdraw the mind and settle it on that very thing. When one sees that the mind is not pleased with that, one should meditate on being pleased with seeing the qualities of samadhi. By seeing the faults of distraction, one can also thoroughly pacify displeasure. If, when oppressed by dullness and sleep, the movement is unclear and one sees that the mind is sinking or suspects sinking, one should remember the appearance of light, remember the qualities of the Buddha, etc., and quickly pacify the sinking. Again, one should firmly grasp that very object. If, when remembering previous laughter and play, the mind occasionally becomes agitated or suspects excitement, one should, as before, remember impermanence and other things that cause aversion, and pacify distraction. Then, again, one should strive to settle the mind on that very thing without any effort. When one is free from sinking and excitement and has entered into equanimity, and the mind naturally settles on that very thing, one should relax effort and remain in equanimity. If one exerts effort to settle the mind in equanimity, then the mind will become distracted. Again, when the mind settles on that object without any effort, and settles as one wishes, then one should know that shamatha has been accomplished. This is also a common characteristic of all shamatha, because its nature is only one-pointedness of mind. It has been extensively explained that the object of shamatha is also uncertain. This explains the uninterruptedness of the object, or it also shows the elimination of unfavorable factors. A Difficult Commentary on Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds, written by Sherab Jungne Lodrö, Chapter Eight, Meditation. Homage to the noble Manjushri Kumara! Those who, with stainless nature, abandon all elaboration, possess the unsurpassed state. The perfections such as wisdom are spoken of in conventional terms, without outflows. Who, with perfect realization, possesses immaculate wisdom.
