Having endured various sufferings, if one does not retreat halfway without achieving the goal, then for the enemy of self-nature who always brings suffering, I should strive to subdue. For anything that brings hundreds of thousands of sufferings, what need is there to say that one will be discouraged? If the wounds caused by meaningless enemies can also be regarded as decorations on the body, then why would I, who am striving tirelessly to accomplish great things, be harmed by suffering? Fishermen, outcasts, farmers, etc., who only think of their own livelihood, can still endure cold, heat, and other harms. For the happiness of sentient beings, why can't I endure it? To the edge of the ten directions of space, in order to liberate sentient beings from their afflictions, at the time of making the vow, I myself have not yet been liberated from the afflictions. Without knowing my own ability, isn't it crazy to speak like this? Thus, when subduing afflictions, one should always be non-retreating. To this I should be attached, regard it as the only thing and fight, except for the subduer of afflictions, for such afflictions, even if I am burned and killed, even if my head is cut off, in any case, I will not surrender to the enemy of afflictions. Ordinary enemies, even if expelled from the country, still live in other countries, and after their power grows, they will still come back. The enemy of afflictions is not like that. Afflictions, afflictions, abandon with the eye of wisdom, remove from my mind, where will they go? Where will they live, and come back to harm me? It is just that I lack the will to persevere. Afflictions, all afflictions do not reside in external objects, do not reside in the senses, do not reside in other places, so where do these reside, and harm all sentient beings? This is like an illusion, therefore one should abandon the fear in one's heart, and cultivate diligence in order to know. Meaninglessly, why can it harm me in hell and other places? Thus, thinking reasonably, one should strive to accomplish the learning that has been said. If one does not listen to the doctor's words, how can the patient be cured by the treatment of medicine? The fourth chapter of the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life", the chapter on vigilance, is complete. Those who wish to protect the learning should diligently protect this mind, if this mind is not

If not guarded, one cannot guard the precepts. Letting the mind's elephant loose, It is like creating the suffering of Avici hell. The harm done by an untamed, intoxicated elephant, Is not as great as the harm born here. If the mind's elephant is tightly bound With the rope of constant mindfulness, All fears will be eliminated, And all good things will come into hand. Tigers, lions, elephants, bears, snakes, And all enemies, The guardians of hell beings, As well as flesh-eaters and rakshasas, If one tames this one mind, All of them will be tamed. If one subdues this one mind, All of them will be subdued. Thus, all fears And immeasurable sufferings, The Buddha said, arise from the mind. Therefore, one should tame the mind well. Who deliberately created The weapons of hell beings? Who created the burning iron ground? Where did those masses of fire come from? All such things, The Subduer said, are born from the evil mind. Thus, in all three realms, There is no fear other than the mind. If one could exhaust poverty by giving, There would still be others born poor. How did all the Buddhas of the past Achieve the perfection of generosity? With a mind of giving to all beings, And with the fruits of giving at all times, Perfecting generosity is the supreme mind. Therefore, giving depends solely on the mind. Wherever sentient beings such as fish are, They are kept from the suffering of being killed. From obtaining the mind of renunciation, It is said to be the perfection of discipline. Unpleasant sentient beings are like the sky, Limitless, it is not possible to subdue them one by one. If this mind of anger is subdued, It is like subduing all enemies. If one wanted to cover this earth with leather, How could one obtain enough leather? Just a little leather for the soles of shoes, Is like covering the entire earth. Likewise, wanting to obstruct external objects, It is impossible to obstruct all external objects. One should obstruct one's own mind. What is the use of obstructing others? Generating one clear mind, One can generate the results of Brahma and others. Although the results of body and speech are numerous, What results can a bad mind generate? Although recitation and asceticism are practiced for a long time, Because they are done with a distracted mind, The Buddha said that they are all meaningless. How can one with this
