Causes harm. If one is disheartened and abandons effort, how can one be liberated from poverty? If one generates the effort of pride, even great ones find it difficult to overcome. Therefore, with a steadfast mind, destroy all the downfalls. If I am defeated by downfalls, the desire to conquer the three realms becomes a joke. I should conquer everything, no one should conquer me. I, the son of the victorious lion, should abide in this pride. Any being who is conquered by pride, is not a possessor of afflicted pride. A possessor of pride does not fall under the power of enemies, those ones become slaves to the enemy of pride. If one is filled with afflicted pride, pride will lead one to the lower realms, destroying the feasts of humans, becoming a slave who eats the food of others, becoming foolish, ugly, miserable, and despised in all places. A ascetic filled with pride, if he also belongs to the proud, please tell me how inferior he would be. One who holds pride in order to conquer the enemy of pride, he is the true possessor of pride and the heroic one who is completely victorious. If one can certainly destroy the increasing enemy of pride, one will fulfill the fruit of victory for beings as desired. If one dwells in the midst of the afflicted side, one becomes like a scarecrow in the sky, like foxes and others treat a lion, one should not be overwhelmed by the host of afflictions. Even if great misfortune occurs, just as people protect their eyes, similarly, even if misfortune occurs, one should not become a slave to afflictions. I would rather be burned and killed, rather have my head cut off, but in no way, should I submit to the enemy of afflictions. Similarly, in all circumstances, do not engage in anything other than reason. Just like wanting the joyful fruit of play, what work is there to do with this? For that work, one should be eager to do it, that work will make one happy without tiring. Even if one does work for the sake of happiness, whether it will turn into suffering is uncertain, if that work itself will turn into happiness, how can one be happy without doing that work? Like honey on a razor's edge, if desires cannot be satisfied, then how much more so will the matured happiness and peaceful, merit be satisfied? Therefore, in order to complete the work, just like a elephant scorched by the sun at midday, meets a lake and enters into it, one should also engage in that work. If it is related to a decline in strength, then start again.

Should be abandoned. If one is good at grasping, then abandon the future; if one wants the future, then one should abandon the present. Just like facing each other with swords on the battlefield with an old enemy, one should stay away from the sword of afflictions and raise up to destroy the enemy of afflictions. If a sword falls on the battlefield, just like quickly picking it up out of fear, similarly, if the sword of mindfulness is lost, one should quickly pick it up remembering the terror of hell. Just like relying on blood, poison will spread throughout the body, similarly, once an opportunity is found, faults will spread throughout the mind. Just like holding a container filled with oil, guarding it with a sword in hand, fearing being killed, the practitioner should be just as cautious. Therefore, if carelessness appears nearby, just like quickly getting up, similarly, if sleep and laziness appear, one should quickly dispel them. For each fault that occurs, one should condemn oneself, and in any case, never let it happen again, one should think like this for a long time. In order to make mindfulness a habit at these times, one should meet with this cause, or want reasonable actions. In any case, before doing anything, one has power over everything, remembering the words of caution like this, make oneself get up more easily. Just like the wind's coming and going controls the cotton, similarly, happiness controls the mind, in this way one will accomplish. From the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, the seventh chapter, named Diligence. Having generated diligence in this way, one should settle the mind in samādhi. A person whose mind is distracted dwells in the mouth of afflictions. With body and mind in solitude, distraction will not arise. Therefore, one should abandon the world and completely abandon conceptual thoughts. One does not abandon the world because of attachment and gain, etc., therefore one should completely abandon these, and the wise should examine in this way. Knowing that with superior insight fully endowed with calm abiding, one can destroy afflictions, one should first seek calm abiding, and that can only be achieved when one is not attached to the world. Who would have true attachment to impermanent things? That person will not see suffering for thousands of lifetimes.
