Thus it is said. If, like the second view, it should not be admitted by others, then how can it be said "admitted by others"? The answer to this is, I do not understand the statement "whatever is established by valid cognition is established for both parties." Like this, when the proponent states the means of proof, is the reason established by valid cognition? How does he know that it is established by valid cognition for others? Because the distinctions of others' minds are not objects of direct perception or inference. How does one know that it is established by valid cognition for oneself? Because one has been deceived by the causes of error for a long time, one is deceived. Therefore, the proponent and the opponent admit the nature of things by the power of admitting that it is valid cognition itself. Therefore, it is reasonable to refute the views of others through the means of what others have admitted. Furthermore, with regard to the aspect of the svatantrika reason, if the pervasion of the reason and the thesis were established by valid cognition, then the svatantrika would become a means of proof. However, the pervasion is not established. Like this, the valid cognition that establishes the pervasion is either direct perception or inference. Among these, direct perception cannot establish the pervasion. Like this, in general, direct perception and non-apprehension can observe fire and smoke, and understand "if this exists, then that arises, and if this does not exist, then that does not arise," but it is not the case that it exists in all places. Inference is also not possible, because it is also an object of certainty. Like this, the object of inference is not all places, because wherever there is a thesis and a related relation, there only the wisdom that knows impermanence etc. will arise, and not in all times and places. Therefore, the pervasion is established only through the means of what worldly people admit, and not by valid cognition, so how can it be said that it is not reasonable to refute the views of others with consequentialist reasoning? Just as the teacher himself said in the commentary on the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, "If it is determined that things are only not born from themselves, then even if one does not admit that they are born from others, there will be a consequence." Even so, it is not the case, because it is a negation of non-existence.

It is because one wants to speak and because it prevents arising from others. The teacher Buddhapālita said that things do not arise from themselves, because that arising would be meaningless and would also be too limitless. Things that exist by their own nature also have no need for arising. Even if they already exist, if they arise, they will become limitless. So he said. Some people's accusations against this are unreasonable, because they do not state reasons and examples, and they do not eliminate the faults that will be explained, and because it is the speech of reductio ad absurdum, it turns away from the meaning of the occasion, so what is to be established, and its reason will become clear, so arising is meaningful, and with the reason that arising will not be limitless, it establishes that things arise from others, so it will contradict one's own established tenet. I think that all these accusations are unreasonable. How so? Like that, for the time being, whatever does not state reasons and examples, that is unreasonable. Why is that? Because if others admit arising from themselves, then one should also ask whether there is doubt about the existence itself arising, because so-called arising from themselves means that the cause itself is the arising. You say that, but you have not seen the doubt about the existence itself arising, and you have also seen that it will become limitless. You do not want what has already arisen to arise again, and you do not want it to be limitless. Therefore, the person you are refuting is unreasonable and contradicts what you have promised. If you refute like that, will others not admit it? Who would state reasons and examples and become doubtful? Even if one has already stated the accusation of contradicting the promise, if others do not turn back, then at that time, even if one states reasons and examples to a shameless person, they will not turn back, so one should not argue with madmen and us. Then the teacher's application of inference to a non-place is merely to be fond of inference itself. The Madhyamikas should not admit the Svātantrika inference, because they do not admit other tenets. So he said.
