Commentary on Entering the Middle Way Commentary on Entering the Middle Way In Sanskrit: Madhyamakāvatārasya ṭīkā nāma. In Tibetan: Commentary on Entering the Middle Way. Homage to the noble Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta! Having paid homage to the Buddha, who has abandoned the two obscurations, and to the all-knowing one, I shall clearly explain the meaning of entering the Middle Way. Here, the entry of those who possess realization is preceded by the understanding of the subject matter, the purpose, the connection, and the purpose of the purpose. Therefore, at the beginning of the treatise, the subject matter, etc., which are the cause of entry, should be explained. The subject matter of this treatise is the eleven grounds. The purpose is realization. The connection is that the treatise and the purpose are characterized as means and what arises from the means. The purpose of the purpose is to fully understand the conventional and ultimate truths by realizing the eleven grounds. The Root Wisdom of Nāgārjuna and others are the entrance to the Middle Way treatises. Therefore, it is said that it is for the sake of entering the Middle Way treatises. Having thus explained the subject matter, etc., in order to explain the meaning of the commentary on the treatise Entering the Middle Way, which is summarized by the first two verses, the words "Middle Way treatises" etc. are mentioned. Among them, that which is free from the two extremes of annihilation, permanence, existence, non-existence, etc., is called the Middle Way. The Root Wisdom and others composed by the noble Nāgārjuna, which explain this, are the Middle Way treatises. Moreover, it is a treatise because it subdues the enemy of afflictions and protects from bad migrations. Thus, if one manifests the meaning of the Middle Way through the sequence of listening, thinking, and meditating on the treatise, then by abandoning all the afflictive obscurations such as attachment arising from the view of self and what belongs to self, and all the cognitive obscurations taken from the manifest clinging to objects of knowledge, one subdues the enemy of afflictions. Similarly, when a person with good fortune realizes the meaning of the Middle Way from the treatise, he generates great joy and accumulates a great deal of merit.

able to protect from evil destinies. Therefore, whoever subdues all the enemies of afflictions, whoever protects from the fear of evil destinies, this treatise has the qualities of subduing and protecting, and these two qualities are not present in other schools. Thus it is said. For the sake of entering, it is called for the sake of understanding the meaning, thus the Madhyamaka treatises extensively speak of the nature of the conventional and the ultimate, therefore it is extensively explained here, this treatise will enter into that, wanting to compose Entering the Middle Way, it refers to the master Chandrakirti wanting to compose Entering the Middle Way. Perfectly Complete Buddha refers to whoever understands everything as it is without inversion, that is the Perfectly Complete Buddha. Saying "Perfectly" from there is to eliminate inverted knowledge. Saying "Complete" is to show that there is no doubt and ignorance. Bodhisattvas refers to whoever has the mind of enlightenment that is the nature of all-knowing, free from all obscurations, that is called Bodhisattva. Also saying "also" is because not only is it initially praising great compassion to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but also to the Perfectly Complete Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as well. "Initially" refers to first. "Bhagavan" refers to the Arhat who has subdued anger. In "Great Compassion", "Great" refers to pervading all sentient beings. The Buddha himself refers to the wisdom that is free from afflictions and cognitive obscurations in the conventional, possessing the qualities of the ten powers etc., is the Buddha himself in relation to the appearance of the disciples to be tamed. In the ultimate, it is the nature of the Dharmakaya that pacifies all elaborations. Therefore, neither one nor many, it is the basis of the perfect great bliss that benefits self and others. Neither existent nor non-existent, like space, equal in taste, the nature is difficult to express. Unstained and unchanging, peaceful and unequal, pervasive and without characteristics. Each individually self-aware without analogy, I prostrate to the Dharmakaya of the Victorious Ones.
