For objects that are hidden, establishing their truth through inference is not deceptive, such as impermanence, etc. What is not to be inferred, and is established as not to be inferred, is therefore not harmed by inference, and is not deceptive, such as the chief and the all-pervading, etc. The dharma that has become the nature of those is not permanent, because that very nature is to be established. Nor is it a result, because the permanent does not have a result. Therefore, it is not deceptive because inference does not harm the hidden object. Similarly, inference that engages with hidden objects through the power of scripture is deceptive if it does not harm them. Like this, after the objects of the two valid cognitions that engage through the power of objects are completely purified, then, when examining whether there are contradictions between earlier and later positions in the treatises that are later accepted as valid cognitions, at the time when a distinction of thought arises, at that time, inference that relies on scripture will not be harmed. Such an inference, if it does not harm objects that are extremely hidden, is not deceptive. For example, if one acknowledges the nature of desire, etc., and that what arises from it is not dharma, and does not show fire offerings, etc., for the sake of abandoning it, then that is not harmed by inference. Like this, non-Buddhists say that desire, hatred, delusion, and the actions of body and speech that arise from them are not dharma, and in order to abandon them, they perform bathing, fire offerings, and fasting, etc., for the support. Whatever is not spoken of in that way is not deceptive. Like this, bathing, etc., does not eliminate sins, because it is not contrary to the sins of desire, etc. Whatever does not harm the cause is not its harmer. For example, just as sweet, cool, and oily substances do not harm phlegm diseases, so too, bathing, etc., does not harm the causes of sins, because it only purifies external impurities, but not internal desire, etc.

It is not so. If any teaching has a completely pure realm, then it is not deceptive, therefore, following the world, it becomes a valid cognition. Because worldly people only accept completely pure words as valid cognition. Thus, since the teaching is accepted as valid cognition, the prophecy of the noble Nagarjuna is certainly true, therefore, by seeing that his treatises explain the teachings without error, determining suchness is indeed the correct reasoning. Therefore, it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Relationship and concordant means, state the meaning of a person, that speech is worthy of examination, other than that is not reasonable, perception and inference, both are harmless, seen and unseen meanings, in that meaning there is no deception." It means that just as the words that can completely eliminate faults are not deceptive for the objects to be understood by perception and inference, similarly, for the extremely hidden objects, the words that have eliminated faults are also not deceptive. Therefore, with the reason of having the characteristic of eliminating faults, for the extremely hidden objects, it is still inference through the wisdom that arises. The aspect of worldly valid cognition is like this, that is, any understanding that arises depending on the difference of how the teaching is indicated is not deceptive, for example, like understanding the objects to be understood by perception and inference. For the extremely hidden objects, it is also the understanding that depends on the difference of how the teaching is indicated, with such reasoning, for the extremely hidden objects, the teaching is valid cognition. The two places to be understood by perception and inference, by whom they are spoken, then he speaks the third place, what certainty is there about this? If it is said that depending on the difference of the teaching that is spoken as such, this reason is certain, then this fault does not exist. Because for the speaker and the close listeners, all three places are taught by the same speaker, so they can be understood only through perception, for them, there is no doubt. The present listeners recognize it through the characteristic of the words of the Bhagavan that have eliminated faults. Like this, the Bhagavan.
