When craving is active, afflictions and entanglements are no longer active, thereby cutting off and not cutting off. In order to understand this, contemplating the suffering aspect that is in accordance with arising is the active contemplation. By practicing and counteracting the active contemplation, in order to be liberated from all afflictions that are active in craving, meditation and yoga reach their ultimate limit, which is the ultimate application contemplation. Immediately after that, obtaining the samadhi of the actual first dhyana is the contemplation of the fruit of the ultimate application. For this, through individual characteristic discrimination, correctly knowing what should be abandoned and what should be obtained, the mind aspires to obtain it. Special adhimukti is to begin with the correct application for its meaning. Extreme isolation can extremely abandon great afflictions. Correctly gathering joy can extremely abandon intermediate afflictions. For what is obtained by application, the mind abides in the absence of manifest pride. With the ultimate application, small afflictions can be extremely abandoned. The fruit of the ultimate application is to experience the fruit of practice through the contemplation of correct practice. Just as there are seven contemplations in the samadhi of the first dhyana, so too, up to the samadhi of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, it should be combined accordingly. In short, for everything between the realm of nothingness, one should know that there are two aspects of the coarse characteristic: by abiding in extreme non-peacefulness, that is, by abiding in extreme suffering and being extremely short-lived. Regarding this, one should know that in the higher realms, the opposite of this is the nature of peace. What is the limited establishment like? Meditating on the small first dhyana, meditating on the medium first dhyana, meditating on the large first dhyana, just like the first dhyana, it is the same for the remaining dhyanas and samadhis. The result of meditating on the small first dhyana, the medium first dhyana, and the large first dhyana is three births in dhyana.

Just as with the first dhyana, the remaining dhyanas also have three births in dhyana, such as the Brahma host and so forth. It is for this very reason that the third dhyana is spoken of. If one asks how the fourth dhyana is said to be the eighth ground, it is not so, because there are five Pure Abodes there. For the formless realms, since there is no other abode, there is no distinction of birth. Therefore, by meditating on the formless realms as small, medium, and large, it is fully understood that there are high, low, inferior, and superior states. Among these, in terms of birth, high and low are due to differences in lifespan and so forth. Inferior and superior are due to differences in the abundance of afflictions and non-afflictions. What is the classification of names like? Whatever samadhis are included in the first dhyana, those that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas enter into, if even the names are unknown to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, then knowledge and entering into samadhi are even more unlikely. This is because the names of these divisions of dhyana are countless, innumerable, and inconceivable. Just as it is said in the Prajnaparamita, like the hundred thousands of samadhis. Similarly, it is mentioned in other Mahasutra of the Great Rope. Just as what is included in the first dhyana, so too should it be understood what is included in the remaining dhyanas and the formless realms. What is purity like? From the best of the first dhyana up to the peak of existence, it is called purity, because it makes suitability ultimate for the purpose of accomplishing special qualities. This is the meaning included in the dhyanas and the formless realms. The four immeasurables are like this, the so-called immeasurable is because it focuses on immeasurable beings, is the cause of immeasurable collections, is the cause of obtaining immeasurable dharmas, and is the object of immeasurable wisdom, therefore it is immeasurable. These are four, namely, immeasurable loving-kindness, immeasurable compassion, immeasurable joy, and immeasurable equanimity. Among these, loving-kindness is:
