Thus. The so-called "perception of obstruction" refers to the perception of walls and so on. The so-called "various perceptions" refer to the perceptions of pavilions, gardens, mountains, rivers, the moon, the sun, and so on. The so-called "infinite space" means that infinite space itself is the object of consciousness. The so-called "all those kinds," etc., the so-called "having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space," refers to one who wishes to enter the samadhi of infinite space. With what consciousness does one generate superior understanding of infinite space? That is, one grasps that consciousness as infinite, retreats from the perception of the sphere of infinite space, and generates superior understanding of the infinite aspect of that consciousness. Therefore, it is said, "consciousness is infinite." The so-called "having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness in all those kinds" refers to rising from the samadhi of infinite consciousness, and from the forest of objects, not finding any object, whether form or formless, that is different from consciousness. At that time, because no object is found, one has completely transcended infinite consciousness, taking nothing at all as the object, and cultivating that superior understanding. The so-called "having completely transcended the sphere of nothing at all in all those kinds" refers to when one previously entered the samadhi of nothing at all, retreating from the perception of slight existence. Now, seeing that the perception of the sphere of nothing at all is actually dependent, one retreats from the perception of nothing at all, hence it is said to be without perception. Just as in the samadhi of no-mind, it is not that all kinds of perception cease, but rather one enters into an extremely subtle perception without characteristics. Therefore, it is said, "neither perception nor non-perception." This is an explanation of the meaning of the words of the sutra on meditation and attainment. The establishment here is meditation and the formless realms, all of which are completely defiled and completely purified, as well as establishment and

It should be understood through the gate of purity. Then, how is it from the gate of universal affliction? There are four roots of the unstated, namely, desire, views, pride, and ignorance. Because of these, the mind becomes afflicted, obscured by the gate of afflicted meditation, so that all unstated afflictions and near afflictions can enter. Among them, desire makes it afflicted with the affliction of tasting flavors, because it tastes the rough flavor of pleasure. Views make the meditator who has particularly superior views himself afflicted, because this person has superior views, so he is also called a person with superior views, and because he is in accordance with meditation, he is also called a meditator. This person also relies on meditation and universally practices views such as speculation on the limits of the past. Pride makes the meditator who has particularly superior pride himself a universally afflicted person, because through special realization, he becomes arrogant through contemplation. Ignorance makes the doubter who is particularly superior and the meditator himself afflicted, because only in this way can he separately realize, and for the special realizer who desires liberation, doubt arises as to whether this is liberation or not. Thus, for those who have an afflicted mind, the afflictions and near afflictions that are practiced in the form realm and the formless realm will enter. How is it purified? Pure meditation and the formless realm are both virtuous, so even if it is worldly, it is called pure because it is free from all entangling defilements. How is it established? Through the gates of establishing the limbs, establishing the attainment of equilibrium, establishing the limits, and establishing the names. Thus, meditation is established through four gates. For the formless realm, it is established in three ways, namely, abandoning the establishment of the limbs among them. What is the establishment of the limbs like? The first dhyana has five limbs, namely, investigation, analysis, joy, bliss, and single-pointedness of mind. The second dhyana
