There are four branches to dhyana: complete clarity of inner self-nature, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The third dhyana has five branches: equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth dhyana has four branches: completely pure equanimity, completely pure mindfulness, a feeling that is neither happiness nor suffering, and one-pointedness of mind. Are there not other mental phenomena such as perceptions besides these? Why are conceptualization, etc., established as branches? The answer is that through these aspects alone, the aspects of the antidote, benefit, and the basis of both are perfected. The meaning of this is that the establishment of branches is done based on the branch of the antidote, the branch of benefit, and the branch of both. For example, the first dhyana has the branch of the antidote of conceptualization and analysis, because they completely abandon desires, malice, and thoughts of harming others. Joy and happiness are the branches of benefit, because conceptualization and analysis abandon opposing factors, or because they obtain joy and happiness arising from being separated from them. One-pointedness of mind is the branch of the basis of both, because due to relying on samadhi, conceptualization and so on arise. The first of the inner self-nature of the second dhyana is the branch of the antidote, because they cause the abandonment of conceptualization and analysis. Among them, the clarity of the inner self-nature is because previously conceptualization and analysis disturbed the mind, and the mind was very difficult to settle on the object of focus, but now because it is separated from conceptualization and analysis, the mind settles very evenly on the object of focus, therefore, because it is separated from the disturbance of conceptualization and analysis, it is not disturbed due to extreme clarity. Joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind are the same as before. The equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness of the third dhyana are both branches of the antidote, because they abandon joy. Happiness and one-pointedness of mind should be understood as before. The fourth dhyana is equanimity.

Perfect equanimity and perfect mindfulness are the limbs of the antidote, because they abandon pleasure. That which is neither pleasure nor pain is the limb of benefit. One-pointedness of mind is the limb of the support of both of those. For the formless, there is no establishment of limbs, because it relies on the quiescence that has become of one taste. How is the establishment of entering into equipoise? It is to enter into the first dhyana by way of the seven types of attention, and likewise up to neither perception nor non-perception. What are those seven types of attention? Attention that distinguishes characteristics individually, as well as increased aspiration, as well as extreme isolation, as well as the perfect collection of joy, as well as investigation and ultimate union, as well as attention to the result of ultimate union. When entering into the first dhyana, how does one possess the seven types of attention? There, seeing the objects of desire as incompatible, one distinguishes them individually as having coarse characteristics, because they are not present in the first dhyana. One contemplates them as having peaceful characteristics, and this characteristic is the attention of individual discrimination. That should also be mixed with hearing and thinking, etc. Therefore, having transcended hearing and thinking, etc., in the aspect of meditating with single-pointed certainty, the quiescence and insight that focus on the reason for coarse and peaceful characteristics, and repeatedly meditating on coarseness and peace themselves, is the attention of increased aspiration. From the habituation of that, the attention that arises together with the path of abandonment for the first time is the attention of extreme isolation, because that abandons great afflictions, and the bad migrations of that side cease. Therefore, that yogi rejoices in extreme abandonment, and sees the benefit of abandonment, and a slight isolation mixes with joy and pleasure, and constantly attending to that, in the manner of mindfulness, in order to abandon agitation and sinking, making the mind joyful, that is what collects joy, because in the manner of joining with virtuous qualities, being a true joiner, that
