Fabrication and clear expression are the five branches. The desire to speak other than that is the thought of deception. Approaching fabrication is the desire to speak. If the one to whom it is spoken understands the meaning from that speech, then it becomes a lie. Otherwise, it becomes idle talk, because it is afflicted. The opposite of that is abandoning lying. Furthermore, for the sake of distinguishing friends or non-friends, or for the purpose of creating discord, may these be distinguished, the speech instigated by an afflicted mind with the thought of not being in harmony is slander. It is that which should be distinguished, and recognizing it there, wanting to distinguish, approaching fabrication, and distinguishing, are the five branches. If the one to whom it is spoken understands the meaning, it is slander, otherwise it is idle talk. The opposite of that is abandoning slander. Harsh speech is speaking ill of others and revealing faults with an afflicted mind. It is that which should be spoken as harsh speech, and recognizing it there, a harsh mind, approaching fabrication, and speaking unpleasant words, are the five branches. Also, if the meaning is understood, it is harsh speech, otherwise it is idle talk, because it is afflicted. The opposite of that is abandoning harsh speech. Idle talk is any afflicted speech other than the three actions of lying, etc., that is, possessing desire and possessing what is not Dharma, or words that tease children, or speaking in gatherings, or uttering laments, or singing, etc., or the words of dancers, and evil treatises. From speech, all of these are idle talk. It is speech that does not possess good meaning, and recognizing it there, an afflicted mind, approaching fabrication, and speaking idle talk, are the five branches. The opposite of that is abandoning idle talk. Those are the four paths of action of speech. Those called the three dharmas, etc., and called the path of attachment, attachment is greed, the desire that what belongs to others, what is possessed by others, wealth or enjoyment or women, should become one's own, and the determination to take it.

They are the property of others, and recognizing that they are the property of others, wanting to obtain them, having the mind to steal, and being certain to take them, these are the five limbs. The opposite of these is non-attachment. Absence of hatred means that hatred is the intention to harm, towards other beings, wanting to strike them, etc., acting in a way that causes harm. It is what should be hated, and recognizing that it should be hated, having a rough mind, being certain to hate, this is hatred, it has five limbs. The opposite of this is absence of hatred. What is called right view is returning from wrong view. And wrong view is to slander cause and effect and actions. It should be slandered, and recognizing that it should be slandered, wanting to slander, being certain to slander, this is slander, it has five limbs. Severing all roots of virtue, entering into non-virtuous roots, the wisdom of afflictions that does not enter into virtuous roots, this is what is called wrong view. Other than this, the others are wrong discriminations, because they do not sever all roots of virtue. What is called "these are the complete instigators" means that they are completely instigated by the seven abandonments. The meaning here is that killing, etc., are completely instigated by hatred or ignorance, and abandoning these is completely instigated by non-attachment, etc. What is called "in the manner of precepts with complete instigators" means in the manner of the state of precepts with the characteristics of the seven abandonments with non-attachment, etc. What is called qualities are the ten paths of virtuous action. Purity is the absence of completely acting with the defilements of precepts that seek. What is called "because of the complete purity of one's own qualities," the precepts' own qualities are the ten paths of virtuous action, because these are completely pure. Precepts are particularly superior, because they are the nature of precepts. What is called "the activity of body, speech, and mind becomes pure" refers to the actions of body, speech, and mind without defilement. What is called the noble path is
