The suffering of and so on, is merely the nature of suffering, as stated by the venerable Arya Deva. Therefore, due to the darkness of ignorance blinding the eye of wisdom, for each ordinary person, the happiness and contentment that are not of the nature of being ascertained by the reversed conceptualization that does not exist, and in the realms of gods, asuras, humans, kinnaras, pretas, siddhas, vidyadharas, and so on, if their realization is taken as the standard, then happiness and contentment do not exist. For example, it is like the happiness and contentment of enjoying the desired object that appears in a dream state. Regarding this, the previous statements clarified that happiness is of the nature of suffering, which is intentional. The later statements clarified that happiness does exist in conventional truth. Therefore, masters like Chandrakirti do not think that happiness should be denied in conventional truth. In order to explain the second verse, it says "such" and so on. The so-called "manifestly desiring happiness" refers to merely treating suffering, which is not the nature of happiness itself, but clinging to the manifestation, hence it is manifestly desiring happiness. The so-called "that" refers to worldly people. In "becoming the antidote to suffering" and so on, suffering refers to hunger and so on. Because it is its antidote, it manifestly desires, because desire is of a false nature, therefore it is any enjoyment of the nature of reversal, that is, enjoying forms and sounds and so on, that is, experiencing it. In order to explain the third verse, it says "of treating suffering" and so on. Those who have not accumulated the object of merit arising from generosity, the so-called generosity, refers to the action of body and speech with a universally motivated mind. Because it is virtue, it is merit. Because it is the nature of karma, it is also action. Because it is the basis of the universally motivated mind, it is an object. One who has not accumulated it will not have enjoyment arising.

In order to explain the four-line verse, it is said, "Thinking," and so on. The meaning of this is that the world seeks happiness, and happiness will not arise without external objects, etc., and external objects, etc., are also the result of generosity. Therefore, the Blessed One first spoke of generosity and other dharmas. Therefore, generosity is the cause of happiness, so it is the cause of higher rebirth. If it is said that ordinary people, hearers, solitary Buddhas, etc., do not think of the benefit of others, so how can the generosity of those without compassion become the fruit of enjoyment? In response to this, even if there is a situation that does not match the mind of the giver, it is because there is no compassion. The so-called "in accordance with the action" means that the nature of generosity is the cause of producing happiness and enjoyment, which is in accordance with it. The so-called "great self" means having the nature of producing desired enjoyment. In order to indicate this with the root, it is said, "Low compassion," and so on. The so-called "extremely rough mind" means that in order to moisten with the water of compassion, the mind is rough towards the affairs of others. For example, external things become moist when soaked in water, and become rough without water. Therefore, it is said, "Those who only care about their own interests." It means only pursuing one's own interests. The so-called "become the cause of cessation of suffering" means only the cause of happiness that eliminates suffering. The meaning of this is that the result of generosity is enjoyment, but if generosity is given with a heart moistened with compassion, great results will arise. For example, when generosity is given with a heart moistened with compassion, together with its results, it is completely dedicated to the benefit of all sentient beings. Therefore, since sentient beings are boundless, generosity is also boundless, so generosity will become a great result. When generosity is not fully accepted with a heart moistened with compassion, then it is only beneficial to sentient beings.

It will become the fruit of enjoyment. Because it is inexhaustible, it will not become a great fruit. Therefore, even if the giver's mind becomes harsh, there is no contradiction in it being the fruit of enjoyment itself. In order to explain this with commentary, it is said "which ones" etc. Just as merchants give away very small wealth and desire very much wealth, so here too, one cherishes one's own interests, gives away very little wealth, and desires great enjoyment in the next world. Therefore, it is said, "Even if one pursues desires, one will pursue them even more," and the beggar will become even more of a giver, because the beggar is satisfied with just food etc., but this person desires great enjoyment. Thus, even by relying on non-Bodhisattvas, it is shown that giving is the cause of eminence, and in order to show that it is definitely a good cause, it is said "This also" etc. "When is the time" refers to the time of giving. "This" refers to not only the lineage of Bodhisattvas. Also, the particle "also" refers to not only the lineage of Bodhisattvas. "Noble being" refers to when this person engages in giving, at that time, because he has invited a supreme field of merit, he has met with a noble being. Therefore, "completely cutting off the stream of existence" means that from meeting with a noble being, having obtained the path through his teachings, one cuts off the continuation of samsara. "Its cause" refers to the cause of giving. "Peaceful" refers to nirvana, because it is free from birth etc. In order to explain this with commentary, it is said "Benefactor" etc. The explanation of benefactor is giver. "At all times it is traversed by the noble ones" means that he invites the noble ones, but the noble ones do not rely on him. "Recognizing that samsara has no merit" means in the aspects of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. "Manifesting the stainless noble path" means focusing on the four truths.
