If you don't know the middle, you cannot be liberated. The so-called "no liberation" means no abandonment of afflictions. The so-called "therefore" means that if you do not realize the signless, you cannot be liberated. The so-called "that" refers to the selflessness of phenomena. The so-called "completely" refers to how it is in terms of its nature, obscurations, and the manner of abandoning them. The so-called "it is enough to mention it in passing" means that in the Hearer's Vehicle, it is sufficient to mention disputes and answers in passing regarding the teaching of the selflessness of phenomena. The so-called "for that very reason" means that because there is no fault in teaching the selflessness of phenomena even in the Hearer's Vehicle, that is why it is said. The so-called "for those who are not confused" refers to those whose wisdom is not distracted. The so-called "being able to comprehend the suchness of meaning oneself" means that even Hearers have the ability to fully understand the selflessness of phenomena, but not those of inferior intelligence. The so-called "the text itself should be spoken" refers to composing the classification of the first ground. To show this, it is mentioned "at that time, to him" etc. The so-called "at that time" refers to the time of realizing the first ground. The so-called "to him" refers to the Bodhisattva. The so-called "first, giving itself becomes especially superior" means that among all the perfections, it is easy for Bodhisattvas to engage in giving, therefore giving is said to be the first cause of perfect enlightenment through the accumulation of merit and so on. Moreover, it is especially superior because the Bodhisattva realizes all of the Dharmadhatu on the first ground. Among them, universal pervasion means that just as one thing has emptiness, so too does everything, because there is no such thing that is separate from the Dharmadhatu. Like the reasoning that "in this way, phenomena do not exist." When universal pervasion is realized, then one obtains the equality of self and others. After obtaining that, one does not think of differences between self and others. Therefore, here the Bodhisattvas engage in the benefit of others just as they do for themselves. In order to clarify this through explanation, "Bodhisattva" etc. is mentioned.

Generosity, it is said, has three aspects: generosity of material things, generosity of Dharma, and generosity of fearlessness. Among these, the generosity of material things of a Bodhisattva is the complete giving, with any intention, of objects that are faultless both internally and externally, without regard for reciprocation or karmic maturation, desiring to make offerings and to gather followers; and the giving through any action of body and speech. This eliminates suffering such as hunger and thirst, and thereby gathers sentient beings. The generosity of Dharma is the showing of the path to well-being and liberation, preceded by the means of livelihood that do not harm sentient beings, and by treatises, arts, and the essential instructions for professions that possess academic qualities; this is the generosity of Dharma. This also averts the suffering of livelihood, bad migrations, and cyclic existence, and thereby gathers sentient beings. The generosity of fearlessness is the liberation from those who have become frightened by kings, thieves, enemies, predators, and the like. This also averts the fear of being separated from life, possessions, children and wives, and therefore gathers sentient beings. Ethical discipline has two aspects: the ethical discipline of abstaining and the ethical discipline of engaging. The ethical discipline of abstaining is the ethical discipline of vows. The ethical discipline of engaging has two aspects: the ethical discipline of accumulating virtuous qualities and the ethical discipline of benefiting sentient beings. Among these, the ethical discipline of vows is the taking of the seven types of individual liberation vows: Bhikshu, Bhikshuni, Shramanera, Shramanerika, Shikshamana, Upasaka, and Upasika. The ethical discipline of accumulating virtuous qualities is for the purpose of fully maturing the qualities of Buddhahood within oneself. The ethical discipline of benefiting sentient beings is for the purpose of maturing sentient beings. Abiding in these ethical disciplines, one will not harm sentient beings even for the sake of one's life, nor will one allow others to harm them. Patience has three aspects: patience that does not mind the harm of others, patience that accepts suffering, and patience that definitely thinks about the Dharma. Among these, mindfulness and
