The great Madhyamikas say that emptiness is precisely that all things have no origination from the very beginning. The Shravakas say that things are empty because they do not abide in their own nature, and they say that cessation is emptiness. Cessation and non-origination are, in meaning, the same, therefore, please be patient. What is said is for you to think that non-origination and cessation are not the same thing. If self-nature exists, then cessation is unreasonable, because the self-nature of fire is warmth, which will never cease, because fire cannot be without warmth. Therefore, if you admit that things cease, then you must admit that things have no self-nature from the beginning. Therefore, cessation and non-origination are the same in meaning. Therefore, if the Shravakas also admit cessation, then they have admitted that all dharmas have no self-nature. Furthermore, in order to explain through the sutras of the Shravakas and the verses of the Prajñamūla-madhyamaka-kārikā composed by the venerable Nagarjuna, it is said, "Bhagavan," and so on. The so-called "teaching of Katyayana" refers to the fact that from the place where the teaching of the monk Katyayana is established, the so-called "rejection of both existence and non-existence" means that the Bhagavan rejected the conceptualization of existence and the conceptualization of non-existence. For example, in the sutra in which the teaching was spoken to Katyayana, it says: "Katyayana, because most of this world is attached to existence and non-existence, it will not be completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and displeasure, nor will it be completely liberated from the cycle of the five realms, nor will it be liberated from the suffering of grief over the death of parents." And so on. This sutra is accepted by all schools. Therefore, if the Shravakas admit the rejection of existence and non-existence, then they must admit the absence of self of phenomena. What is Bhagavan like? It is said, "Knowing things that exist and do not exist," meaning that knowing things that exist and things that do not exist as they truly are, only the Bhagavan can be called that.

Oh! Knowing things and non-things is also not discriminating towards them. Thus, in order to strongly prove that the Hearers, etc., have completely known the selflessness of phenomena, and in order to welcome the doubts of others, it is said, "If there is, if," etc. Among them, "if there is" refers to the Hearer Vehicle. Saying that the Great Vehicle is true is because the selflessness of phenomena is taught from the Hearer Vehicle. What is the need to teach the Great Vehicle? The answer to this is, "Its reason," etc., is said. Among them, "its" refers to that which says that teaching the Great Vehicle becomes meaningless. In order to show the contradiction with reason and scripture, "Great Vehicle," etc., is said. Among them, "grounds" refers to the ten grounds, such as the Joyful Ground. "Perfections" refers to the ten perfections, such as generosity. "Aspiration" refers to the special intention to benefit beings, such as "May it be like this, may it be like this," etc., which are said in the Sutra of the Ten Grounds, etc. "Great compassion" refers to focusing on all sentient beings. The word "etc." should include the practice of the perfections. "Dedication" refers to dedicating the root of virtue to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. "Two accumulations" refers to the accumulation of merit and the accumulation of wisdom. "Inconceivable nature of phenomena" refers to the inconceivable nature of phenomena of all phenomena, for example: As many grains of sand as there are in the Ganges River, so many Buddhas reside in one pore. Such is the manifestation of miraculous transformations. The meaning of this is that if the Great Vehicle only teaches the selflessness of phenomena, then teaching the Great Vehicle would become meaningless. However, because one also practices grounds and perfections, etc., it contradicts reason. Because this meaning can also be seen in the sutras, it also contradicts the sutras. Regarding this meaning, in the Precious Garland of Advice to the King,

In order to reveal the source of the lineage, it is said, "As it is said," and so on. The Shravaka Vehicle attains the Buddhahood of the Shravaka Vehicle through the Shravaka Vehicle, so one might ask what the Mahayana can do. The answer to that is, it is said, "From the Shravaka Vehicle," and so on. The Shravaka Vehicle does not explain the aspirations of the Bodhisattva that were previously taught, nor does it explain the practice of the Paramitas, nor does it explain the dedication that was previously taught. Therefore, how can the Shravaka Vehicle become a Bodhisattva? If one cannot even attain a Bodhisattva, then how can one attain Buddhahood? Because the Mahayana has everything, only the Mahayana can attain Buddhahood. In order to explain this in detail, it is said, "Bodhi conduct," and so on. To practice for the sake of Bodhi is to engage in the activities of entering the Paramitas. To abide in it is to abide continuously. For this meaning, it is not taught in the Shravaka Vehicle, but it is taught in the Mahayana, therefore the Mahayana is wise, and those who have the ability to accept and reject will regard it as the Buddha's teaching. This shows that the Mahayana has the superiority of aspirations and so on. Now, in order to clearly clarify the Dharma-lessness alone, in order to show that the Mahayana should be taught, it is said, "Dharma-lessness," and so on. In order to explain the reason for this, all Mahayana mainly teaches Dharma-lessness, while others only mention it incidentally. In the Shravaka Vehicle, "Form is like a mass of bubbles," and so on, only mentions Dharma-lessness incidentally. Therefore, in order to speak extensively about Dharma-lessness, it is also reasonable to teach the Mahayana. When extensively teaching Dharma-lessness, in order to reveal the source of the lineage of Master Nagarjuna, it is said, "As the teacher said," and so on. "Before realizing the signless" refers to not being separated from the signs of blue and yellow, etc. on things.
