Because the mind is without inherent existence. The meaning of "not wanting to exist" is that one does not want the mind to exist in a truly existent way, so one does not want to see it in a truly existent way. Having refuted the opponent's argument, in order to explain in detail the previously shown liberation, "thus" and so on are stated. "Thus" refers to the manner previously shown. "As it is" refers to the truth. "Going without meaning" refers to realizing that going is without inherent existence. "Like a fire without cause" refers to how fire ceases when firewood is exhausted. "Without a place" refers to the fact that the container world is without inherent existence. Therefore, it is said: Why is it that existence and non-existence do not abide before the mind? At that time, there is no other object; without an object, it is completely pacified. The meaning of this is that it is said that even for the Hearers and so on, liberation is attained by exhausting attachment to pleasure and pain through fully understanding the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, it is established that even for the Hearers and so on, there is a complete understanding of the selflessness of phenomena. In order to show the objections of others, "If so" and so on are stated. What is said in the Ratnavali about seeing the absence of inherent existence is said to the Bodhisattvas, not to the Hearers and so on. So how can it be established that the Hearers and so on have a complete understanding of the selflessness of phenomena? The answer to this is that it is not so, so "That is also not existent" and so on are stated. "Because it is said thus" refers to what is said in "As the eye is by illusion" and so on. If asked, "How is this known?" it is said from the point of view of the Hearer Vehicle. The answer is, it should be said, so "It should be said" and so on are stated. "Immediately following" refers to immediately following "Without cause, like fire, without place, without taking, one passes into Nirvana." Thus, even the Bodhisattva, having seen, refers to having seen the absence of inherent existence in the manner previously shown. "Definitely desiring enlightenment" means definitely desiring to be completely liberated from suffering.

That is what is desired. Then, why do they not completely pass into nirvana? The answer is: It is because of compassion, connecting to existence until enlightenment. It is said that Bodhisattvas, due to the compassion they have been accustomed to since beginningless time, remain in samsara for the benefit of sentient beings. If the previously spoken treatise was spoken with regard to Bodhisattvas, then at that time, saying "like that, even Bodhisattvas" and so on, specifically to Bodhisattvas, would become meaningless. Even the word "even" would become meaningless. Therefore, the previously spoken treatise was spoken with regard to Shravakas and so on, and the later spoken treatise was spoken with regard to Bodhisattvas. Then, for Shravakas and so on, it is indeed established that they also have complete knowledge of the absence of self of phenomena. Not only in the Ratnavali is it said that Shravakas and so on have complete knowledge of the absence of self of phenomena, but also to show that it can be seen in the Shravaka sutras, "Shravaka" and so on are mentioned. Just as something appears solid on the outside but has no essence inside, the skandha of form should be understood in that way. Just as a bubble in water is seen to have no essence even for a moment, the skandha of consciousness should be understood in that way. Just as a mirage that looks like water is seen from afar but not seen from near, the skandha of perception should be understood in that way. Just as when the trunk of a banana tree is split apart, there is not even a little essence inside, the skandha of formation should be understood in that way. Just as the appearance of an illusory elephant and so on is seen, but it is also non-existent, the skandha of consciousness should be understood in that way. "Formations are definitely to be examined" means examining the skandha of form and so on. Or, in order to show the source of the Ratnavali, "this meaning itself" and so on are mentioned. "This meaning itself" refers to the characteristic of Shravakas and so on having complete knowledge of the absence of self of phenomena. Vehicle
