Since the unproduced fruit is not the cause, the fruit is not produced from the cause. 'Both' means that the arising of aggregates is not observed from oneself and others, because there is the fault of speaking of both. Having thus prevented arising from self and other, in order to prevent arising in the three times, it is said, 'Also not seen in the three times.' Among these, the past and future times are not actually seen because they do not exist. The present time is not actually seen because it is separate from one and many. 'Grasping at self will be exhausted' means that when the arising of aggregates is not observed in oneself and others, both, and the three times, attachment to the appearance of aggregates is reversed, so grasping at self will be exhausted. 'Then' means from the exhaustion of grasping at self. 'Action and birth also' means that action and birth will also be exhausted. Therefore, the Ratnavali says, 'Grasping at self arises from attachment to the appearance of aggregates, and when attachment to the appearance of aggregates is exhausted, grasping at self is exhausted.' Therefore, if it is said that the grasping at self of the Hearers and others is exhausted, then it must be admitted that there is no attachment to the appearance of aggregates and so on, and because there is no attachment to the appearance of aggregates, the aggregates are also completely known to be without self-nature. Therefore, it must also be admitted that the Hearers and others also have complete knowledge of the selflessness of phenomena. Again, it is said that in the Ratnavali itself, it is also taught that the Hearers and others have complete knowledge of the selflessness of phenomena, in order to show this. How is it said, 'The eye is by confusion' means that the eye is confused because the cause of confusion is in the power of the object. 'The senses' means the eye and so on. 'Present objects' means present form and sound and so on. 'Hold' means like a wheel of fire, because the objects are without self-nature, they are held as the present self-nature. In order to establish by reason that objects and senses are without self-nature, it is said, 'The senses and'

You have already acknowledged that the faculties and the objects that are their domain are forms that have the elements as their cause. If you think that the faculties and the objects of the faculties, such as forms, are the nature of the elements, that is, have the attributes of earth, water, fire, and wind, that is also acceptable. "The elements are individually meaningless" means that each one is without inherent existence. "These" refers to the faculties and objects that depend on the elements. "In reality" refers to ultimate truth, because it is only in conventional truth that there is talk of faculties and objects. "Meaningless" means without inherent existence, because there is no basis, so there is no dependent. In order to show how there is no inherent existence, the phrase "the elements" and so on is stated. Here, are the elements established separately, or are they mixed together? They are not established separately. If the elements were established separately and independently, then fire without firewood would turn to ashes, because they would be established independently, without needing to rely on the earth and so on that are present in firewood and so on. If they are established by being mixed together, that is also unreasonable. If the elements are mixed together, it would follow that their individual characteristics would disappear. In that case, what would it be like for the elements to be mixed together without their individual characteristics? That is the meaning. "The rest is also determined in the same way" means that just as fire is not established separately or mixed together, the rest, such as earth, are also determined in the same way, not separately or mixed together. For example, if it were established separately, then because earth itself is solid, it would be established independently, without needing to rely on water and so on, which have the nature of moisture and so on. Therefore, they are not established separately. If they are established by being mixed together, "if assembled, there will be no characteristics," as stated before. Similarly, the water element and so on should also be stated. In this way, after showing that the elements are without inherent existence, in order to show that the faculties themselves are without inherent existence by concluding that the elements are without inherent existence, the phrase "how" and so on is stated. "In that way" refers to the manner shown previously. "The elements are also two"
