The Bodhisattva who first arises surpasses the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, because of not fully understanding selflessness. The phrase "also through analysis by one's own intellect" means that through one's own wisdom, it is through the way of fully understanding selflessness. Thus, it is not through the way of scripture. Then, how should we interpret what is said in many scriptures that only the selflessness of persons exists in the Shravakas and others? Well, if that is the case, then in other scriptures, it says, "There is a person who carries the burden, it is not to be said whether it is permanent or impermanent." Thus, it would follow that it is also said that a person exists, so how should that be interpreted? If it is said that saying a person exists is for the purpose of leading those who are manifestly attached to the view of self, then, for the purpose of leading the Shravakas and others who are afraid to enter into the complete understanding of selflessness, it is said that there is no self in persons. Therefore, saying that there is no self in persons is intentional, and since it is not ultimate, there is no contradiction at all. If it is known through reasoning that this is not intentional, then what reason is there for the Shravakas and others to have a complete understanding of selflessness? The answer to that is, in order to prove that the complete understanding of selflessness exists through reasoning, it is stated, "Like the non-Buddhists," and so on. "Like the non-Buddhists" means like those who are free from worldly desire. Just as those who are free from worldly desire, in the manner previously shown, have not abandoned the afflictions that operate in the three realms, so too, the Shravakas and others will not have abandoned the afflictions that operate in the three realms. In order to rely on that very reason, "form, etc." and so on are stated. The meaning of this is that if the Shravakas and others do not have a complete understanding of the two selflessnesses, but only have an understanding of mere selflessness, then at that time there would also be no manifest attachment to form, etc., and attachment to form, etc. would also be inverted, because it will be explained that "not from self, not from other," and so on.

Because, rationally, the nature of form and so on is unreasonable. Even if it is inverted, it is inverted knowledge, but it is unreasonable for inverted knowledge to eliminate afflictions. If inverted knowledge can eliminate afflictions, then even those who are attached to the self, who claim to have a self, will be able to eliminate afflictions. Therefore, it is not like this. Therefore, if you admit that the Hearers and others can eliminate afflictions, you must admit that you fully understand the two selflessnesses. In this way, if you do not fully understand the selflessness of phenomena, you will not be able to eliminate afflictions. After saying this, now, in order to show that if you do not fully understand the selflessness of phenomena, then the complete understanding of the selflessness of persons does not exist either. The selflessness of persons, etc., is mentioned. The selflessness of persons means that there is no self-nature of self, and realizing this is complete understanding. If you do not realize the selflessness of phenomena, then you will also realize the selflessness of persons. In order to show that reason, it is said that it is because of focusing on the aggregates that are the basis for the imputation of self. The meaning of this is that here, wherever the attachment to self arises, it will not be attached to the permanent self that is different from the aggregates that are falsely established by the outsiders, because in that case, even ignorant ordinary people who do not understand the scriptures will not be attached to self. However, the manifestation of attachment to the aggregates arises from the habit of attachment to self. Therefore, as long as the attachment to the aggregates exists, the habit of attachment to self will not disappear, and therefore the attachment to self will not disappear. Therefore, you will not fully understand the selflessness of persons. Therefore, if you admit that the Hearers and others fully understand the selflessness of persons, then at that time, if you do not understand the self-nature emptiness of the aggregates, that will not be established. Therefore, the complete understanding of the selflessness of phenomena can be established. Furthermore, the view of the destructible collection, etc.
