Its object is that. The previously shown eight limbs are its nature. Among them, right view is the limb of complete cutting off, as it ascertains the suchness of how it is experienced. It completely cuts off the suchness realized by the path of seeing, which is the word called right view. When entering the path, it also has the power to generate it, so it is established in this way. Right thought and right speech are the limbs that make others understand. The suchness realized by right view is made understood to others through right thought and right speech. Because it is said that one should not speak words that are not distinguished and not examined. When entering into meditation, these two are present, because the two have obtained the power to generate them. Entering into meditation is not right thought and not right speech. Right speech, right action, and right livelihood are the limbs that make others trust. Because they ascertain the view of the realized one, etc., in the order as they are, in reality. Among them, right speech is the determination of speech that is in accordance with thought, obscurations, and the increase of prophecy, so it is known that his view is pure. Right action, walking and coming, etc., are perfect in conduct, so it is known that the discipline is completely pure. Thus, right action is contrary to wrong conduct, so for one who is in accordance with it, even for the sake of life, he does not do what should not be done, so others will generate certainty about the one who has discipline. Right livelihood is seeking robes, etc., of how to abide, so it will be determined that he is a person with little desire for resources. Thus, for the sake of merely maintaining life, free from faults such as hypocrisy, the conduct of body and speech is right livelihood. Right effort is the limb of purifying the obscurations of afflictions. Thus, that diligence in the state of samadhi, which is held by right view and free from sinking and excitement, is called right effort.

Furthermore, through proper effort, one cultivates the path that is the antidote to the afflictions that are to be abandoned through meditation, in order to thoroughly eliminate them. Therefore, proper effort is a limb that purifies the obscurations of affliction. Proper mindfulness is a limb that purifies subtle obscurations of affliction, because by not forgetting the characteristics of calm abiding and so forth, it does not give an opportunity to subtle afflictions such as sinking. For example, for one who has arisen with agitation and a mind that suspects agitation, attending to objects of aversion is a characteristic of calm abiding; if the mind has sunk or a mind that suspects sinking has arisen, attending to objects of great joy is a characteristic of superior seeing. For one who abides in the path of mere calm abiding, or in the path that leads to the increase of union, for the subtle afflictions of sinking and agitation, for attending without the effort of affliction, it is a characteristic of equanimity. Thus, by not forgetting the characteristics of calm abiding, superior seeing, and equanimity, subtle afflictions such as sinking will have no opportunity. Proper concentration is a limb that purifies the obscurations of special qualities, because it perfects qualities such as clairvoyance. For example, the antidote to whatever is the non-afflicted, unknowing, and opposing side of the nature of qualities such as clairvoyance, the nature of pervasive samadhi, is proper concentration, because meditation is the basis for accomplishing all special qualities, and therefore it is the antidote to the obscurations of samadhi that have become the opposing side to the accomplishment of qualities such as clairvoyance. Thus, the essence has been shown. Companions are the minds and mental factors that are concordant with them. Cultivation is like the limbs of enlightenment. For example, proper view, cultivation, and abiding in solitary places, and so forth, have been extensively taught. The meaning of these words should be understood as previously explained. The fruit of cultivation is complete severance, and causing others to understand, and faith.
