It is the accumulation of earth. Worldly meditation, and whatever meditation completely holds beings, that is the accumulation of merit. Whatever meditation perfects non-conceptual wisdom, that is the accumulation of wisdom. Or, all five, such as giving, are also the accumulation of wisdom, because giving and so on are completely dedicated to unsurpassed enlightenment. Among them, the accumulation of merit is for happiness in samsara. The accumulation of wisdom is for samsara without afflictions, putting the intention for the benefit of sentient beings first, even if completely taking birth, it will not be defiled by the faults of samsara. The accumulation of merit and wisdom, for bodhisattvas, in the first countless eons it is small, in the second countless eons it is medium, and in the third it is large, it should be understood in this way. It has been taught that the accumulation of merit and wisdom exist together. That is like a storehouse, because it is the place of accumulation of merit and wisdom. The third generation of mind is the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, which are the four mindfulnesses, the four correct abandonments, the four legs of miraculous powers, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, and the eight noble path branches. Among them, starting from the four mindfulnesses, up to the seven branches of enlightenment, twenty-nine have been explained. The eight path branches will be explained later. That is like a great path, because all the noble beings have gone and followed. The fourth generation of mind is the coexistence of tranquility and insight. Among them, the abiding of the mind that possesses nine aspects is tranquility. Among them, the nine aspects are abiding in oneself, abiding continuously, placing abiding, approaching abiding, taming, pacifying, extremely pacifying, focusing on one point, and equipoise. Among them, abiding in oneself is withdrawing the mind from the object of external objects, and closely binding the mind to the inner self.

Merely and constantly practicing it makes it subtle, which is manifest gathering. To settle after dismissing means to gather back the mind itself that has been scattered outwards due to forgetfulness. Approaching settlement means from the very beginning, with mindfulness, the mind does not scatter outwards, but settles within. Taming means from the very beginning, for the reason of scattering, such as form, generating the perception of suffering, thereby not causing it to scatter. Pacifying means seeing the afflictions that disturb the mind, such as conceptual thoughts, as suffering, thereby not causing it to scatter excessively. Completely pacifying means when conceptual thoughts and the like manifest and arise due to forgetfulness, pacifying them. One-pointedness means maintaining the continuity of samadhi without interruption through manifest concentration. Equanimity means through good habituation, not engaging in manifest concentration, that is, effortlessly maintaining the continuity of the mind's samadhi without scattering, settling extremely well. Vipassanā (higher seeing) has four aspects: discrimination of dharmas, extreme discrimination, universal discrimination, and universal contemplation. Among these, knowing as many objects as there are, such as the objects tamed by conduct, the objects of the wise themselves, such as the skandhas, and the objects tamed by afflictions, is called discrimination. Knowing how these objects exist as they are, in terms of counteracting the signs of bad rebirths, is called extreme discrimination. Universally discriminating these objects with non-conceptual knowledge combined with wisdom. In terms of liberating from all inversions, settling the mind on what is not inverted is called universal contemplation. Śamatha (calm abiding) and vipassanā combined have been explained. The generation of mind is like a good horse, śamatha and vipassanā combined, naturally entering, neither falling into samsara nor nirvana, carrying one comfortably. The fifth generation of mind is form.
