Because they will not come again. Likewise, the six forms of desire and the complete exhaustion of the ninth form, one becomes a once-returner and a non-returner. The final exhaustion of the peak of existence, the Arhats, they abide on the path. There are four abidings in that application, that is called entering the stream. Arhats are non-learners, the other seven are learners. Because exhaustion is learning, so it is said. The meaning of this is that by abandoning the sixth form of afflictions in the desire realm, one becomes a once-returner. By abandoning the ninth form of afflictions, one becomes a non-returner. By exhausting the last subtle subtle form of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, one becomes an Arhat. The once-returner and the non-returner, they abide on the path of meditation. The Arhat abides on the ultimate path. Abiding in the application of the fruits such as stream-enterer, it is called entering the fruit. Among the eight types of individuals, the Arhat is a non-learner, because the outflows are exhausted, so it is a non-learner. The other seven types of individuals are learners, because they are learning in the exhaustion of obscurations. Therefore, for the antidote to the nine types of afflictions in the desire realm, among the nine bodhicittas, the first is together with the perfection of discipline. The perfection of discipline, which is the bodhisattva abiding in the nature of a bodhisattva, relying on the mind of enlightenment, with a mind of compassion as the forerunner, completely takes all vows and protects the actions of body, speech, and mind. This bodhicitta is like the source of jewels, because all the precious qualities arise from it. The second bodhicitta is together with the perfection of patience. The perfection of patience, which is the bodhisattva abiding in the nature of a bodhisattva, relying on the mind of enlightenment, with a mind of compassion as the forerunner, accepts harm and the actions of body, speech, and mind that do not mind suffering. That is like the ocean, because it does not waver when unpleasant things happen. The third bodhicitta is dili-

It is united with the perfection of diligence. The perfection of diligence is when a Bodhisattva abides in the nature of a Bodhisattva, relying on the mind of enlightenment, with a mind preceded by compassion, truly accomplishing all virtuous dharmas through the actions of body, speech, and mind. It is like a vajra, because it cannot be destroyed due to the firmness of true faith. The fourth generation of mind is united with the perfection of meditation. The perfection of meditation is when a Bodhisattva abides in the nature of a Bodhisattva, relying on the mind of enlightenment, with a mind preceded by compassion, having mastery over the actions of body, speech, and mind, and the mind abides in all aspects. It is like a mountain, because it does not move due to not being distracted from its object. The fifth generation of mind is united with the perfection of wisdom. The perfection of wisdom is when a Bodhisattva abides in the nature of a Bodhisattva, relying on the mind of enlightenment, with a mind preceded by compassion, having obtained mastery over the actions of body, speech, and mind, and being able to fully distinguish all dharmas in all aspects. It is like a great medicine, because it completely pacifies all diseases of afflictions and the obscurations of knowledge. The sixth generation of mind is united with the perfection of skillful means, and also united with the four immeasurable qualities that are inexhaustible. Among them, for any dharma, whatever is appropriate for the purpose of accomplishing, increasing, obtaining, or completely abandoning it, that is its skillful means. Among them, the wise and intelligent are those who are skilled in skillful means. Only those who are skilled in skillful means are perfections, therefore it is the perfection of skillful means, because the intermediate words are omitted. Its function is to make generosity and so on inexhaustible, because he completely dedicates generosity and so on to great enlightenment. The four immeasurable qualities are loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Among them, the four immeasurable qualities of a Bodhisattva, in short, have three aspects: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on dharma, and without focus.
