These are the sufferings of birth and so on. Now, in order to show that the establishment of the conventional and ultimate truths in the treatise Entering the Middle Way is different from other treatises, it is said, "This system," and so on. "This system" refers to the establishment of the conventional and ultimate truths. "Bhikshu" means one who possesses the vows of a bhikshu. "Having extracted from the Madhyamaka treatises" means having extracted from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way and other works by the master Nagarjuna. "According to the scriptures" means not contradicting the characteristic scriptures such as the Sutras. "According to the oral instructions" means following the oral instructions of the master Nagarjuna, which have been passed down from one to another. "Apart from this, this dharma" means that apart from this Madhyamaka treatise, there is no dharma with the characteristic of emptiness. Similarly, whatever establishment of the conventional and ultimate that this treatise Entering the Middle Way makes is not found in other treatises, so the wise should be certain. In order to explain it with commentary, it is said, "How," and so on. "Other treatises" means those written by Vasubandhu and others. In order to clarify that this system is not found in other treatises, it is said, "Therefore," and so on. "Some" means some teachers. "Some schools say that the ultimate" means that the view of the Sautrantikas is that whatever appears is not different from consciousness, just like the appearance of two moons and so on. Blue and so on are also appearances themselves, so they are not different from consciousness. Those that appear as blue and so on sometimes appear and sometimes do not, because they are temporary. Therefore, it is necessary to admit their cause, otherwise, because there is no cause, they do not need to depend on others, and they will always exist or not exist. Therefore, by the reasoning of "always existing or not existing," they will always exist or not exist. Therefore, what is the cause of these appearances as blue and so on? That is the external object.

Because it is meaning, it is also impermanent. Consciousness is also impermanent. Both of these are devoid of the actions of Isvara and others, and devoid of self and what belongs to self. By fully knowing these as impermanent and so on, from clinging to self and what belongs to self, since there are no afflictions such as desire arising from self and what belongs to self, it is liberation. This is what the Sutra school says is the ultimate meaning. The so-called "thatness" is the ultimate meaning itself. The so-called "accepted as conventional" means that having made an establishment of ultimate meaning, it is accepted as conventional. In order to show that this is also unreasonable, "that is" and so on are said. The so-called "not directly seeing the suchness of the meaning of the Madhyamaka treatises" means that whatever is the non-inverted meaning of the Madhyamaka treatises is said in this way because of not knowing it, because the meaning with such characteristics is not famous in the world, which has been shown before. In order to show the faults of the views of some others, "and some others" and so on are said. Some teachers say that whatever establishment is made by the Vaibhashikas is the conventional establishment of the Madhyamikas. How do the Vaibhashikas ultimately accept conditioned and unconditioned dharmas? Among them, unconditioned dharmas are space, cessation through discrimination, and cessation not through discrimination. Among them, space is the nature of non-obstruction. Cessation through discrimination is when, if one discriminates and examines, one obtains the cessation of afflictions. Cessation not through discrimination is when one obtains cessation due to the lack of causes, for example, for a person whose eye and mind are focused on one object, for another object, due to the lack of causes, one obtains the cessation of eye consciousness, just like eye consciousness does not arise. Conditioned dharmas are form and feeling, and so on. All of these are impermanent, devoid of self and what belongs to self, and devoid of agents such as Isvara. From fully knowing these as impermanent and so on,
