Because suchness is only emptiness, and manifesting it is not in a gradual manner, because it has no parts. Thus, the wisdom that aims at dependent origination completely cuts off the arising and ceasing of suffering, and this is called completely knowing suffering. Completely cutting off the arising and ceasing of karma and afflictions is called completely knowing the origin. Completely cutting off the arising and ceasing of the nature of dependent origination is called completely knowing cessation. For the path, also completely cutting off arising and ceasing is called completely knowing the path. Thus, in the Sutra Showing the Inconceivable Realm, Manjushri, how does one know the four noble truths? Son of the gods, here, whoever sees all conditioned things as not arising by their own nature, he completely knows suffering. Whoever sees all dharmas as without heat, he will abandon the origin. Whoever sees all dharmas as completely pacified, he has realized cessation. Whoever sees all dharmas as extremely empty and without arising by their very nature, he has cultivated the path. Therefore, since only with the forbearance of knowing the Dharma, one realizes suchness in a single moment, and since there is nothing else to be observed, how does one establish the sixteen moments of the path of seeing? Therefore: The self-nature of the meaning is one, Itself is manifest, What is there to be examined by the pramanas? What other unseen parts are there? Thus it is said. The meaning of this is, for one thing that is inseparable from blue and so on, and that manifests all aspects, what unseen parts, such as impermanence, are there to be realized by pramanas such as inference? Therefore, inference with objects such as impermanence is meaningless, because impermanence and so on are realized by direct perception alone. If it is said that because suchness has no parts, suchness is directly realized in a single moment, if one accepts the direct realization of individual distinctions, then is it true that the path of seeing is only a single moment?

However, depending on the certainty that clearly reveals the nature of imputation in other ways, the system of sixteen moments is formed. For example, although it is possible for discriminations to arise sequentially after seeing an উৎপল (utpala, Sanskrit: utpala, Romanized Sanskrit: utpala, literal meaning: blue lotus) with characteristics such as blue, impermanence, and luster, this does not hinder the non-discriminating consciousness from fully manifesting the object. Just as when non-discriminating consciousness sees a blue object, the qualities such as blue and impermanence are not different, because no difference appears. Therefore, the qualities such as blue and impermanence are not different. Blue and so on, which have such a nature, are apprehended by non-discriminating consciousness, because it apprehends things as they are. If the non-discriminating consciousness does not apprehend how qualities such as blue are not different from things, then the consciousness free from discrimination would be mistaken, and therefore would not become a valid cognition. Therefore, one should directly realize the partless entity of all self-natures. Furthermore, in later times, through cutting off superimpositions, various discriminations arise sequentially. For example, just as the discrimination "this is exactly a fish bladder" arises through cutting off the superimposition that a fish bladder is silver, the discriminations of blue and so on arise sequentially through cutting off superimpositions such as non-blue and permanent. Similarly, it should also be understood here that in one moment, the suchness characterized by the emptiness of the four noble truths is directly realized. Later, after cutting off superimpositions such as "it is not emptiness," even if definite cognitions such as knowledge of dharma in suffering arise sequentially, it does not hinder the direct realization of suchness in one moment. Therefore, even if the nature of things has been understood in all ways, it is only that part which is familiar and clear, etc., that has the ability to cut off superimpositions through the arising of certainty, that can be understood.
