Thus it is said. This is because all defilements are adventitious, and because the nature of the mind is naturally pure, and because all beings have the potential to become Buddhas, therefore it should be said so. Furthermore, the Bhagavan said in the sutras, "All sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha." This fully clarifies that all have the potential to attain the state of unsurpassed Bodhi. The venerable Maitreya also said in the Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra: "In all there is no difference, but suchness is purified, because the Tathagata is that, all beings possess that heart." This also proclaims the one and only Mahayana. In the Sutra Entering the Two Truths, it is also said: "By meditating that all dharmas are without self-nature, one abandons afflictions, not by other means, for the root of afflictions is attachment to things." Thus it is taught. In this way, Manjushri, how are afflictions subdued, and how are they fully known? Manjushri replied: In terms of the ultimate truth, on all phenomena of things that are extremely unborn and unceasing, in the conventional truth, there is inverted attachment, from which arise conceptualization and discrimination, from which arises improper attention, from which arises the clinging to a self, from which all views arise, and from which all afflictions arise. Son of the gods, if one understands all dharmas that are unborn and unceasing in the ultimate truth in a way that is thoroughly understood, then that understanding is without inversion, without liberation, and without separation in the ultimate truth, and this is proper attention. In this, one will not cling to the non-existence of the ultimate truth, and views will not arise. On this unborn dharma, by not seeing afflictions, one should regard it as extremely subdued. When, with the wisdom of not seeing the appearance of afflictions, in the ultimate truth, if one does not understand in a way that does not understand that things are extremely empty, extremely without characteristics, and unborn in the ultimate truth, then, sons of the gods, in a way that does not understand afflictions, there is.

How shall I know? For example, when a vidyā-mantra is recited on poison, the poison is pacified; similarly, when the types of afflictions are fully understood in a way that is extremely imperceptible, then the afflictions will be completely pacified. Son of the gods, anyone who correctly contemplates all phenomena that are unborn, unarisen, and without substance, this is the type of afflictions, so it was said. This is because the arising of the entire network of afflictions, karma, and birth has its root in attachment to entities; therefore, that which becomes its antidote is the Perfection of Wisdom that leads to the city of virtue; therefore, those who seek this meaning should rely on completely abandoning all the various conceptualizations of evil paths by meditating on the emptiness of all phenomena. Thus, the one vehicle that is the nature of the Great Vehicle is accomplished. In order to explain the word Great Vehicle, "Great Vehicle" and so on were spoken; in order to explain the reason for its greatness, "ignorance" and so on were spoken; the so-called complete abandonment of ignorance is the abandonment of ignorance together with its habitual tendencies. Their path is the vehicle. In "bri sha u dha ra zhes bya ba la sogs pa la," etc., in the Indian language, the Great Vehicle is called "mahatayana," and when the "ta" in it is changed to "a," it becomes "mahāyāna," so how does the position of "ta" become "a"? The answer to this is: because this is also contained in the words "bri sha u dha ra zhes bya ba la sogs pa la," etc., it is reasonable for the position of "ta" to become "a." In order to explain other explanations of the Great Vehicle, "or again" and so on were spoken; the vehicle is also it, and the great is also it, so it is the Great Vehicle, meaning the Great Path. In order to explain the reason for its greatness, "Buddha" and so on were spoken; because the Buddhas with inconceivable wisdom reside there, it is called the Great Path, just as the king's palace is called great. In order to explain the reason, the end of the complete distinction of things
