That which is said, such as this, is said to be the condition of ignorance for the consciousness in the form of samsara together with afflictions, but not for all consciousness. The wisdom of the Bhagavan is caused by compassion, because by the power of compassion, the Bhagavans remain in samsara. For example, although the first lamp is caused by mustard oil, if the mustard oil runs out and butter is added, it will not revert. Similarly, here also, although consciousness is caused by ignorance, if ignorance ceases and wisdom appears by the power of compassion, the Bhagavans will not be faulted for having ignorance. Some say that the Bhagavans cause wisdom to appear by the power of compassion. Even so, ignorance will not cease. Like this, if wisdom appears by the power of compassion, then that is not the appearance of wisdom that exists in reality, because what exists in reality has already been prevented. Whatever appears that does not exist in reality cannot be without delusion. For example, for those with cataracts, the appearance of non-existent hairs and moons, etc., cannot be without delusion. Similarly, here also, if the appearance of non-existence is not delusion, it will not occur, and delusion is ignorance itself. Therefore, if the Buddha has wisdom preceded by compassion, then it will be a fault to be with ignorance. If someone asks, even if the Tathagata has ignorance, what is the fault? It is not so, just as those who are free from desire among the outsiders, the Bhagavans will also fall into afflictions preceded by ignorance. That is also not right, because those who are free from desire among the outsiders do not know that ignorance itself is ignorance, but the Bhagavans know that ignorance itself is ignorance, and therefore they do not fall into afflictions preceded by it. That is also not right, even if the Tathagatas know that ignorance itself is ignorance, they also admit that the Tathagata has ignorance. For example, for those with cataracts, hairs and so on appear, and I, because of the cataracts, see this untrue thing, although I fully understand that it is a delusion, but still...

Just as a snake does not return to its sloughed skin, so it is here as well. If that is the case, then it is unreasonable to say that the Blessed One has abandoned the afflictions together with their predispositions. But that is not so, although the Blessed Ones have the power to abandon ignorance, they do not abandon ignorance because of the compassion of the Blessed Ones, otherwise it would lead to annihilation. It is said that they have abandoned the obscurations of afflictions together with their predispositions and the obscurations of knowledge because they have the power to abandon them. Therefore, it is said elsewhere: Afflictions, like unburnt roots, are considered to be abandoned. Some consider the Blessed One to possess wisdom. Others explain it this way: The Blessed Ones have reached the end of the path of non-conceptual and effortless activity, therefore the characteristics of wisdom do not appear. Moreover, according to the reasoning previously stated, self-awareness is unreasonable, so how can wisdom appear? Furthermore, if the realm of reality is extremely pure and the phenomena of dependent origination are to be observed, then at that time wisdom arises and appears in relation to them. However, in the realm of the Buddhas, the object to be observed and the observer become equal to each other, so the realm of reality is extremely pure, and the phenomena of dependent origination and wisdom become one with emptiness, so how can wisdom appear? If wisdom does not appear, then how can it not lead to annihilation and how can the benefit of sentient beings be accomplished? That is not so, you say that if wisdom does not appear it will lead to annihilation, do you think that the Blessed Ones will be annihilated? Or do you think that wisdom will be annihilated? The Blessed Ones will not be annihilated, because the Blessed Ones have the nature of the Dharmakaya. The Dharmakaya is also called Suchness, which is one with all qualities. As it is said in the Noble Vajra Cutter Sutra: Those who see me in form, and those who know me by sound, have entered the wrong path, and those people will not see me. Buddhas should be seen as Dharmata, and the guides are Dharmakaya.
