One should not say that everything is emptiness, or non-emptiness, or both, or neither. However, if one does not speak of the nature as it exists, one cannot understand it, so we abide in the conventional truth. For the sake of conventional meaning, in order to accord with the dispositions of those to be trained, one can also impute and say "empty." One can also say "not empty," one can also say "empty and not empty," and one can also say "neither empty nor not empty." Therefore, it is said, "to be spoken for the sake of imputation." It should be understood that the intention here is this, as it says in the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way: "Everything is true and is true, neither true nor untrue, neither untrue nor not untrue." The meaning of this is: "Whatever one liked before, apply that to whatever it is. If it appears, it will never become a vessel for the Dharma." So it is said. In short, at the very beginning, to the beings to be trained who desire to hear about the self-established entities of the Blessed One and the distinctions of the nature of the divisions of entities, for example: "Just as barbarians cannot understand other languages, so without worldly people, one can never understand." And, "Likewise, arguing with worldly people, whatever worldly people consider to exist, I also consider to exist; whatever worldly people do not consider to exist, I also do not consider to exist." By these statements, for those with the dimness of ignorance, the Blessed One temporarily spoke of what is imputed as true in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases as being true in relation to seeing that. Because, by what reaches the end of the peak of existence, the various distinctions of the formation, abiding, and destruction of the wind mandala and so forth, which are boundless by the space element, and which have causes, have experiences, and have faults, the Blessed One, who shows them closely without error, is all-knowing, all-seeing, and knows all worldly behaviors, is to me and mine.

It is for the purpose of generating respect in the world. Thus, to the disciples who, with faith, generate respect, thinking that the Bhagavan is omniscient, it is later said that everything is not true. Truth is that which does not change into something else. But conditioned things are destroyed moment by moment, so seeing them change into something else, everything is not true. In some places, it is said that everything is true and not true, referring to ordinary beings, it is said that everything is true. Referring to noble beings, it is said that everything is false, because they perceive it that way. Some, who are accustomed to seeing Suchness for a very long time, but whose obscurations have not been slightly uprooted, it is said that it is neither true nor untrue. In order to abandon the slightly existing obscurations, just as the blue and non-blue of a vixen are blocked, both are blocked. This is what the Buddha Bhagavan followed and taught, turning away from the wrong path and placing on the right path is called teaching. Thus, the teaching given to the disciples is the following teaching. Now, in order to explain the meaning of emptinesses, therefore, it is said, such as inner emptiness. The term 'eye empty' means that the eye is empty of its own nature. The term 'that' refers to the eye. The term 'that nature' refers to the characteristic of being empty of its own nature. Similarly, the term 'thus' refers to the ear and so on, which are also empty of the nature of the ear and so on. Because their nature is also emptiness. If asked, by what nature are they empty? The answer to that is: Because of the nature of being constantly abiding and not being destroyed. Thus it is said, in terms of the nature of being immutable and indestructible, they have no nature. For example, if the eye and so on had a nature, then, since the nature is immutable and indestructible, they would not change and be destroyed, but that does not exist.

These are all without inherent existence. The so-called emptiness of the interior means that the eyes and so on are understood as sentient beings. In order to reveal the source of the sutras, it is said, "As it is said," and so on. In order to explain the permanence and non-destructibility. Therefore, it is said, "Which of these," and so on. The so-called "not abandoning self-nature" refers to having an immutable self-nature. Here, if we follow the view of the teacher, then the words of the sutra and its explanation are as stated here. If we follow the view of the Holy Liberation School, then the words of the sutra become "not permanent and not destructible," and its explanation is that permanence is accumulation. There, because the self-nature of things is not observed, things are not permanent. Because there is no destruction like this, it is non-destructible. Because it has this nature of the Dharma of non-arising and non-ceasing, the eyes and so on are called emptiness of the interior. In order to reveal the source of the treatises, it is said, "As it is said," and so on. The so-called "As it is said" and so on, comes from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. Self-nature arises from causes and conditions, which is unreasonable. It means that if sprouts and volitions, etc. have self-nature, then what causes and conditions are needed for existing things? Just as present volitions and sprouts, etc., do not need to take ignorance and seeds, etc., in order to achieve them, similarly, they will not act for the sake of arising for other things, because they have self-nature. If it is said that before arising, some things also do not have self-nature, and if it is said that they do, then arising becomes meaningless, but before arising, self-nature depends on causes and conditions, and then arises later. If you think so, then "If it arises from causes and conditions, self-nature becomes made." is said. If it is said that it arises from causes and conditions, so it is considered to be self-made. Therefore, it is admitted that self-nature is made.
