arises from clinging to self. If clinging to self disappears, all afflictions will cease. "Having attained omniscience" means that by realizing the selflessness of phenomena, one comprehends in all aspects the reality of all phenomena as they are. "In order to be liberated" means that in order to be liberated from the obscurations of afflictions and the obscurations of knowledge, one comprehends the nature of phenomena as they are, thereby eliminating the obscurations of knowledge. If, as long as there is attachment to the aggregates, there is no attachment to self, then attachment to self will not arise. How then can a system of understanding both the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena not be established for those who fully understand dependent arising and thereby fully understand the selflessness of phenomena? In order to answer this question, the Shravakas and others are spoken of. "Merely seeing the cause of dependent arising" means that one merely sees the dependent arising of "this arising, that arises," but does not see dependent arising by its very nature. "Not having cultivated the complete selflessness of phenomena" means that they do not possess the characteristics of being without signs and without effort, because the basis for attaining the Buddha's teachings does not exist in them. Therefore, since they have not cultivated the complete selflessness of phenomena, such a system has not been established. For this very reason, "in the three realms" and so forth are spoken of, meaning that it exists in those who are of such a nature only through the method of abandoning the clinging to self that is the cause of the afflictions of the three realms. "For them" and so forth, is because they have not fully realized the selflessness of persons, and therefore do not abandon desire and so forth. Thus, after explaining the conclusion of the two kinds of selflessness previously explained, in order to explain these selflessnesses extensively, "Thus" and so forth are spoken of. "This itself" refers to selflessness itself. "Many ways" refers to sixteen and four ways.

In the manner of... Again, the term "again" is used because it depends on two aspects. The phrase "to those to be tamed" refers to those who are to be tamed through emptiness of the internal and so forth. In order to show this through explanation, it is said, "selflessness" and so forth. The phrase "the various thoughts of those to be tamed themselves" is because those to be tamed have an interest in entering into emptiness through emptiness and so forth. In order to show the classification of the twenty emptinesses within that, it is said, "within that" and so forth. The phrase "with elaboration" means to elaborate through sixteen aspects. The phrase "summarized and explained again as four" is because four emptinesses are spoken of in summary. It is also accepted in the Great Vehicle. The statement "is" is because the twenty emptinesses are also accepted in the Great Vehicle, since they are the nature of the path. The meaning here is that if elaborated, there are sixteen emptinesses; if summarized, there are four, such as emptiness of inherent existence; and if very briefly summarized, there are two, distinguished by the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of persons. In order to show the twenty emptinesses from the source of the sutras, it is said, "as it is said" and so forth. These will be explained above. In order to show that the distinctions of these are also conventional truths, it is said, "emptiness or non-emptiness" and so forth. Emptiness and non-emptiness are established in dependence on each other, so there is not the slightest bit of inherent nature. The phrase "in such a way, due to the will of those to be tamed" means having made it according to the will of the beings to be tamed by emptiness. The phrase "in the treatise" refers to the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. The phrase "if" and so forth means that if some thing is not emptiness, but has inherent nature, then at that time, depending on it, there would be a little emptiness, but since there is not the slightest bit of non-empty thing, how could there be an emptiness imputed in dependence on it at that time? It is not even called emptiness, and the phrase "is" is because some want to express things exactly as they are, so all ways.
