Why should refutations be made? It is said that it is for the sake of answering questions regarding contact, etc. The refutation is: does the result arise from contact, or does it arise without contact? Whichever side is being refuted, that is the answer. If it is said that it produces equally without contact, what reason is there for this? etc. For that purpose, through the examples of the eye and the magnet, the fault of speaking about cause and effect is refuted, and in order to raise these points again, a further refutation should be made here. In this way, the faults that are stated in the context of dependent origination, etc., by means of "not from self," etc., should also be applied to the eye, etc. If it is said that only what is not in contact can produce, then what is meant by "can produce"? "Can produce" means the ability to do something, that is, the ability that exists in the cause. Here, it is not possible for the result that has already been produced to have the ability, etc. In this way, the refutations that are stated on the basis of dependent origination, etc., should also be made here. Similarly, just as the refutation of the chariot is stated by means of "how is the chariot, which is named dependently, other than or not other than its parts?" etc., the same should be done for the wheel, etc. If the opponent cannot completely refute the other party, as previously stated, what should be done? If I do not establish my own position and only refute the position of others, then I will be able to completely refute the other party. However, since neither side's position exists, how can I completely refute the other party? In this way, by negating the object that is accepted by others, it is only to be proven that conceptualization ceases. How can it be said that I have not established my own position? That is: If things exist, then conceptualizations arise; How things do not exist has already been thoroughly examined. If things do not exist, then these do not arise, for example: Just as there is no fire without fuel. Ordinary people are bound by conceptualizations, Yogis without conceptualizations become liberated. Whatever is a reversed conceptualization,
