Therefore, it is said, "One should correctly observe these five aggregates," and thus, it is established that the object of the view of self is only the five aggregates. The reason for saying "therefore" is that the five aggregates are the object of the view of the perishable collection. The statement "This view is a collection of the nature of destruction" means that because it takes the five aggregates as its object, it obtains the name 'view of the perishable collection.' Because of perishing, it is "perishable," and because of assembling, it is a "collection," so it is both perishable and a collection, that is, the perishable collection, which is the five aggregates that are in the process of perishing. The wisdom that engages with these (five aggregates) in the manner of self and what belongs to self is called the view of the perishable collection. Therefore, if one takes the five aggregates as the object, one obtains the name 'view of the perishable collection.' Therefore, it is said, "It is not self or what belongs to self." The term "others" refers to other people who are respected by many. The statement "thinking that the mind is the self" means that none of the five aggregates are the object of the view of the perishable collection, but only the mind is. To show the source of the sutra on this, (the Buddha) said, "Oneself is one's own," and so on. The statement "Oneself is one's own protector" means that the protector of one's own mind is only one's own mind, and only one's own mind can subdue one's own mind, not Ishvara (自在天) and others. Therefore, (the Buddha) said, "Who else could be the protector?" because Ishvara and others, other than one's own mind, are not objects to be regarded as protectors. The statement "By oneself being well subdued" means by the very subduing of the mind. The statement "The wise will attain heaven" means that when the mind is well subdued, because one has not done unwholesome deeds, the wise person will attain heaven. The statement "The mind is spoken of as 'mine'" means that from this verse, the mind is spoken of as "mine." The question "From where is this known?" means that here, it is clear that the word "mine" is the object, but the word "mind" is not mentioned, so how can it be understood as not being the self? In order to answer that, (the following will explain) the aggregates.

It is said, "land," and so forth. In order to show that in other sutras, the mind is also spoken of as 'self,' it is said, 'also in other sutras,' and so forth. The saying, 'because it is said to subdue the mind,' means that just as in other sutras it is said to subdue the mind, so also in this sutra, it is said to subdue by 'being able to subdue oneself well,' so the word 'self' refers only to the mind. The saying, 'subduing the mind,' and so forth, means that it is said that whoever subdues the mind brings happiness. Because by subduing the mind, one obtains the happiness of higher realms and liberation, therefore subduing the mind is good. The saying, 'therefore,' is because in other sutras it is said to subdue the mind. 'Oneself is one's own protector.' There, only the mind is spoken of as 'self.' Therefore, the object of the view of the aggregates is only the mind. In order to answer that, it is said, 'to this,' and so forth. The saying, 'if the aggregates are self,' means if the aggregates are only self. The saying, 'because they are many,' means because the aggregates are many. The saying, 'those selves will also become many,' means that because the aggregates and the self are not different, the self will also become many, but you do not think so. The saying, 'the self will become substantial,' means that because the self is not different from the aggregates, and because the aggregates are substantial, the self will also become substantial. The saying, 'looking there,' means not being different from the aggregates. It is also not considered that the self is substantial. The saying, 'because of entering into substance, it will not become inverted,' means that the view of the aggregates focuses on the self, which has the nature of the five aggregates, because it focuses on substance. It will not become inverted. In order to explain it with commentary, it is said, 'to this,' and so forth. The saying, 'I will also become many,' is because it is not different from the aggregates. The saying, 'according to that view,' is according to the view of those who say that consciousness is substantial. The saying, 'by the distinction of eye consciousness, etc.?' means that because the consciousnesses of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are many, those
