DTG104 0001.Commentary on Entering the Middle Way.g2.0f

Therefore. Those are from the aggregates and so on. To show that, it is said, "If," and so on. Because without the aggregates, that grasping does not occur. It is called "apart from the aggregates," because the grasping of self as the object of "I" does not occur. As it is said, it is from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. If there were a self of a different entity other than the aggregates, then it would be grasped as different from the aggregates, like cloth different from a pot. Because it is not the nature of grasping itself, therefore the nature of being different from the aggregates does not exist. Moreover, the one who takes the aggregates without the aggregates, like a flower in the sky, does not exist as different from the aggregates. If the aggregates and so on, if the self becomes different from the aggregates, then there will be no nature of the aggregates. Among them, the aggregates are the nature of arising, abiding, and ceasing because they are accumulations. If there is a self with a nature that is not an aggregate, then it will not have the nature of arising, abiding, and ceasing. Because that which is like that does not exist, or because it is not an accumulation, like a flower in the sky or like nirvana, it cannot be named "self," and because it is not the object that can generate the grasping of "I," the self that is different from the aggregates is unreasonable. Or again, this meaning is, if the self is different from the aggregates, then it will have no nature of the aggregates, that is, the five aggregates of the nature of being able to be changed and felt by form, and taking signs, and fabricating, and distinguishing objects individually. If one wants the self to be different from form to consciousness, then it will be established that the natures are different, and it will become grasping that establishes the natures as different, like the mind different from form. Such grasping is also not. Therefore, it is said that the self that is different from the aggregates does not exist. Thus, after showing that the self that is different from the aggregates does not exist, in order to show that it is also not the object of worldly grasping of "I," it is said, "Aggregates," and so on. The basis of mind.

Also, "to" is called the object of the mind. The reason for "that" is: "That which is not consciousness is also due to the view of self." It is said that those who do not know "self" as having the characteristics of permanence, etc., also have the view of self. If it becomes the mind of ego-grasping, which is the object of the self as a different entity, then at that time, the mind of ego-grasping will not arise in those who do not know the nature of the self, but it will also arise. Therefore, the object of the mind of ego-grasping is not the self. In order to show that meaning with commentary, it says "Whoever self and" etc., such an appearance is one that has the characteristics of permanence and non-arising, etc. "The difference of familiarity" is the manifest familiarity of "I" and "mine" that has been familiar since beginningless time. Among them, first establish the other's position: "If whoever" etc., "now" is this life. "By the power of past familiarity" is the familiarity of grasping the self with the characteristics of permanence and non-arising, etc., in the previous life. "Its object" is the object of self. The meaning of this is that if this life does not fully know the self with the characteristics of permanence and non-arising, etc., then in another life, because it holds that differentiated self, by the power of that intention, the mind of ego-grasping of the object of self arises in this life. In order to show the answer to that, it says "That is also not existent" etc., "Only in some" is those who were reborn as Samkhyas and Vaisheshikas etc. in the previous life. "They have become familiar with the treatises" is from having become familiar with the treatises made by Kapila and Uluka. "Here" is from this life. In order to show by analogy that even though there is no past familiarity, the mind of ego-grasping still arises, it says "This is like" etc., "many eons" is in many eons. "That also" is an animal. "This" is self. "Also to those" is also to animals etc.

Therefore, the reason for saying this is that self-grasping is seen in animals. Such a form refers to permanence and non-arising. The word "also" is used after "the reason for saying this" and so on. "Therefore also" means that whatever the word "also" refers to should include falling into hells and other evil realms. The meaning here is that if, due to the habit of grasping at "I" in other lives, self-grasping arises now with "I" as its object, then beings who are born in the animal realm for many kalpas will not have self-grasping, because they did not have the habit of grasping at "I" before. To show the conclusion, it is said, "Therefore, there is no self different from the aggregates." After negating the self that is different from the aggregates in this way, in order to negate the self that is not different from the aggregates, the former view is put forward, that is, here, their own schools say and so on. Their own schools refer to the schools that are respected by many people. Starting from "aggregates" and so on, it refers to the object of grasping at self being only the aggregates. Why? Because there is no self established other than the aggregates, so it is said that without the aggregates, it is impossible to establish grasping at it. This is the reason. Because the self that is different from the aggregates is not established. In order to explain this through commentary, it is said, "Because of what" and so on. The so-called "reasoning as stated before" refers to the reasoning that has just been explained. The so-called "own school" refers to Buddhists. And "from that also" refers to the schools that are respected by many people. Starting from "some" and so on, some schools that are respected by many people consider grasping at self, that is, the view of the perishable collection (satkayadrishti) with the five aggregates as its object. They consider the five aggregates such as form to be the objects of satkayadrishti. The meaning is that satkayadrishti arises with the five aggregates as its object. Some consider the object of satkayadrishti to be only the mind. In order to explain this through commentary, it is said, "of some" and so on. Here, "this" refers to the five aggregates. In order to point out the source of the sutra for manifestly clinging to the five aggregates as self, it is said, "As it is said" and so on. Here, because of what proximity
