These were spoken to benefit sentient beings by making them understand that all phenomena are without inherent existence, in order to cut off the continuum of suffering in cyclic existence for sentient beings, without harming the elements. The master explains this treatise in order to explain the meaning of what he has said in brief. "Therefore" means that the treatise is for the sake of reversing conceptualization. "Examination" means the thorough examination whose object is the nature of phenomena. "Because of attachment to debate" means because of attachment to debate that has the nature of establishing one's own side and refuting the side of others. "That very nature" means that which has the characteristic of emptiness. In order to show that by explanation, "therefore," and so forth, were spoken. "Extremely well examined" means "not from self," and so forth. The explanation of "that is attachment to debate" is that it was not done out of a desire to overcome others. "What could be better if liberation is attained?" means after afflictions and so forth have ceased. After that, in order to establish the previous assertions of others, "if you" and so forth were spoken. "Establishing and establishing" means establishing and establishing the previous assertions; for example, in the case of refuting self-origination, if one thinks in this way, the conditions such as water that benefit the sprout arising, and so forth, are establishing the previous assertions; similarly, in the case of refuting other-origination, where, how could there be origination from others? and so forth, whatever is said is unreasonable, and so forth, is establishing the previous assertions. Therefore, if it is asked, why is the treatise not for the sake of debate? In order to answer that question, "it should be said," and so forth, were spoken. The meaning of this is that by way of refuting the origination of phenomena by "not from self," and so forth, after showing the meaning that has the characteristic of emptiness, what fault is there for us since phenomena are destroyed by their own nature? In order to show that very nature, "if that very nature," and so forth, were spoken. As it is said

From the Four Hundred. "This Dharma was not spoken by the Tathagatas for the sake of contention." This means that if this Dharma were spoken for the sake of contention, then, in order to thoroughly destroy all evil views, the Dharma should be taught. But in reality, the Buddha did not speak it for the sake of contention, but for the sake of the gate of liberation. Even so, "Just as fire burns firewood, this Dharma also burns the opponents of others." It is said that although this Dharma was not spoken for the sake of contention, it can completely destroy all opponents. For example, the purpose of seeking fire is for cooking and so on, not for burning firewood. Even so, fire has the nature of accomplishing its desired result and being able to burn, so it can also burn firewood. Just as fire is, so too should the wisdom of understanding all dharmas as selfless arise and be known in the minds of believers. "It is not so" means that it is not for the sake of the true meaning. "The cessation of conceptualization is impossible" means that conceptualizations of desire and hatred arise. To illustrate this, it is said, "Why is it?" and so on. "What is wrong with the views of others?" This should be interpreted as "it is conceptualization itself." It is not for the sake of contention, but to show the benefits. Therefore, it is said, "When is this Dharma" and so on. These and others were spoken by the noble Deva. "Those of great non-contention nature" means that the great nature of the noble ones have no contention. Because the noble ones have no sects such as having or not having. For those who have no sects, how can there be the views of other sects? Because other sects are established in reliance on their own sects. Therefore, since there are no own sects and other sects, they are those of the nature of non-contention. Therefore, this Dharma was not spoken for the sake of contention. "Thus" and so on, in short, there are two kinds of sects: one's own sect and the

It is the other's side. If one is attached to one's own side, thinking that the side of emptiness is good, then because the other's side is inverted, you are not happy with it, and therefore you will not go beyond sorrow. Because there is no going beyond sorrow in examining the two, subsequent attachment and anger, which have been nearly destroyed by me. By being neutral to all, cutting off attachment and hatred, one obtains the irreversible, the same taste as happiness, the state of peace itself. Those who have desire and hatred do not attain liberation, which is shown from the source of the sutras. As it is said in the sutras, etc. Whoever hears this Dharma in this verse and subsequently becomes attached and generates desire, and whoever hears the non-Dharma taught in the treatises of the heretics and generates anger, such a person who is destroyed by pride and arrogance will experience suffering in the lower realms. Having thus taught the selflessness of phenomena, now, in order to teach the selflessness of the person, therefore, thus, etc., are taught. By means of scripture and reasoning, etc., the reasoning is "not from self, not from other," etc. The scripture is as it is said in the Sutra of the Ten Noble Ones, etc. In order to show the reason for teaching the selflessness of the person, afflictions and faults, etc., are taught. "Arising from the view of the aggregates" means arising from the view of self and what belongs to self. "All afflictions and faults" means the desire of the three realms, etc., and birth, etc. "In this object" means in the object of the view of the aggregates. "The yogi prevents the self" means that the view of the aggregates is prevented by preventing the self. In order to show it by commentary, therefore, etc., are taught. Because the Shravakas, etc., have the notion of "I" and "mine," therefore it is said to be afflicted. Because the Shravakas, etc., do not have wisdom that corresponds to desire, etc., their view of the aggregates
